The AUR is big because Arch's main repositories are the smallest of all the main distros. Ubuntu still has more total packages.

Arch has 8925 packages in the main repositories and 39210 packages in the AUR.
Ubuntu has 27609 packages in the main repositories and 25235 packages in the PPA.
