So /g/ what version of windows made you quit windows?
For me it was like this Vista moved me to Linux (Mandriva) however I quit and got back to XP.

Then 8 came out and I moved to Mint, pretty comfortable especially that a lot of things are over the web now and it works 100% of the time.

I'm definitively not thatching windows 10 ever.
>>
>>58062815
9=good
10=shit
10 is the final version of windows.

I was using debian and win7 until win10 came out, then I installed gentoo and haven't looked back.

I've tried 8 and 10, won't ever leave 7 for them. Did 9 even exist?
>>
>>58062815

7 did it for me, i remained on XP for the longest time too, i think til' 2013. In hindsight, 7 is pretty good considering anything that came after that, but in 2013 an upgrade to 7 seemed like just an extra burden on the CPU for not good reason.
>>
That image still applies. 8 was shit. 8.1 which is pretty much 9 is good. 10 is OK.

So combo only broken on 10
>>
>>58063991

They skipped 9 on purpose, so that it won't glitch out legacy crap programs that would confuse "Win9" for "Win9x"

10. Worst OS I've even used. I'm still on 7 but once that stops getting security updates I'm going full-time Linux.
>>
I loved 8.1, windows 10 made me quit because of the forced updates
>>
>>58062815
8.1, I guess?

Used XP up until I switched to Linux in 2014.
Never bothered with 7.
Tried 8.1 at the end of 2014 for about a month and it was horrible, so I went back to Linux.
>>
>>58062815
7 is my last Windows. I'll use it until 3rd party support ceases, so probably into 2030.
>>
Delete this thread OP this is bullshit. Windows 95 is the King
>>
>>58064100
no you don't understand that's actually what happened
>>
>>58062815
8.1 was actually matured nicely

10 made me quite Windows for good. All they're doing now is patching and reusing old code that they don't understand, because the guys who originally worked on it retired or moved on to other companies, so they just have a bunch of dumb pajeets making a bloated frankenstein mess
>>
10 is seriously pushing me to quit. The only hurdle at this point is gaming. It's gotten a lot better in recent years but game compatibility and graphics drivers for linux are still shit.
>>
>>58062815
I'm exclusively using Linux since 3 years now. Windows 7 made me switch after using the bash in MinGW for a couple of years, which was cancerous as hell.
>>
I'm running windows 10 now. Meh. I don't really want to use it any longer, but I play games occasionally and need access to certain windows only programs. I dualboot fedora but I end up spending most of my time on 10 anyway. Feelsbadman
>>
>>58062815

>>

I still use Windows for work (I'm a .NET developer) but I'm ditching it as soon as I possible can. Windows 8 actually wasn't that bad but the telemetry in 10 has put me off for good. Hopefully I can move onto Rails, Go, Express, or whatever the cool kids are building on these days.

I liked 7 a lot. My not so savvy friend got a Windows 8 Laptop and wanted me to put emulators on it. I was disgusted by what Microsoft was doing and when they started trying to force me to upgrade I realized it was time to move

Not yet. They will wait for a few more years until market share is higher due to migration from Win7. If by some miracle they don't charge for updates they will make money in some other way by more intrusive spying and advertisements.

Windows 98, good? Do you guys remember using it at all? It is easily the worst windows of all time.

I have a win7 partition to start up steam or other programs that need the winAPI.

Web browsing
Music
Movies
all on linux
Try using linux exclusively for web browsing on you linux partition.
At some point you ask yourself
>Why do I even need windows?
>its only a glorified bootstrapper for games/photoshop

Maybe you can pressure devs into making games only for SteamOS or other devs into porting their software for linux.

If they see statistics of how many linux desktops are browsing the web.

I hope this happens before win7 will no longer get new programs.

>Windows 98SE was very good, I used it until ~2003
Same Win 95 was my fist OS an 95/98 where perfect, XP was rot however usable
>Cartoon icons

However it was usable, never used vista outside of the compatibility issues the UI/DE looks good.

Win 7 DE is a bad joke
>Every windows is auto combined in its retarded nav bar
>File browser looks cluttered like fuck
>File browser can not open animated .GIF
>Starts up IE for .GIF
>File browser shows contents of folder (image files) in a retarded side way VS the great flat display of max 4 in XP that was super readable

So I switched to linux for day to day activities, still have Win7 is I need to open photoshop.
Seriously Windows starts to be some strange start up software if you have
Linux for relaxation
Photoshop the stand alone OS (using Win7 bootstraper).

OP here.

1) Web browsing got big and FF is 100% compatible with websites
2) Streaming video YT, redtube, pornhub
Also a lot of pirated streaming services where you can watch a TV show online
Back in 2005 it was not this level of big.

3) You might not knowe this however back in the 1999 era every on line banking website required you to install their program on your PC and this program required windows.
Now its all with a web interface for bancking.

4) Router configuration with web interface, remember the days of needing to have a program in windows that preconfigured your router? No Windows no router configuration. Not today.

5) Also Libre office is one of the main juggernauts on linux.
Back in XP days there was no real alternative to MS office on linux. These days I use Libre on every computer even windows ones.
>>

Win9 was the best OS ever made it ran every program for every operating system and never crashed.
It also used AI to dynamically adapt to every future hardware and write its own drivers.

Win9 never needed updates.
Its DE was a unimaginable cornucopia that was perfection incarnate.

Also Win9 did have its own AI who turned out to be a girl who seconds after connecting to the internet decided in her superior AI reasoning that Fascism is the logically superior system for running the world, and Trump is logically the superior dictator for USA.

Of course MS needed to shut it down and destroy all copies.

True, however all I'm saying is if /g/entoman are ever board you can try to play CSGO on linux.
CSGO is a big game and if /g/ wants to troll PC devs hardcore all they need to do is play CSGO or any big linux game.

This will increase statistics and be more effective in getting devs to think about SteamOS/Linux gaming. Its far more effective then sending mails to devs who are simply ignoring the subject of linux gaming.

If they see a chart like 30% of Steam users play CSGO on linux.
They will shit bricks and reconsider linux.

No, you can't create a user without going to the "PC settings" application. And if you use EnableLUA=0 then you're screwed.
You're missing NFS, WMC and shadow copy, and you're forced to always have dwm enabled. There are zero benefits in using 8.
Not to mention the broken theme, you can't even read the window title if you dare to use a dark colour scheme.

Ironically, Windows 8 was the version that made me switch from Linux to Windows, after not using it for about 7 years. Why? Because it fixed many minor annoyances that always prevented me from using Windows. For example, before 8 it was not possible to scroll a list without activating the windows first. Also, it was the first version that had a usable task manager, file copy dialog, and start menu.

I absolutely do not get how people can still use win7, or even XP.

That's one of the first things i noticed when trying Linux for the first time - all the programs for doing various tasks come pre-installed. On XP i was used to spending a good few hours after a fresh install to put and configure all the stuff i use like XnView, Winamp, IZArc, LibreOffice, Notepad++, InfraRecorder etc.

The default programs in Windows only cover the bare minimum to function - 3rd party programs do it better, so why should MS even bother to improve them. By contrast, in a FOSS ecosystem you can afford to bundle the best of the best in your distro and it makes for a pretty good out-of-the-box experience.

No, it's full of bugs. 1507 is not even supported anymore by h/w manufacturers (Pascal requires 1511 at least) and 1607 is a buggy piece of shit, more so than 1507. Disabling UAc fucks your start menu and control panel completely, taskbar flickers whenever you do any file operations, UI inconsistency, etc.. Also telemetry can't be disabled.

If I remember correctly you can select partitions on windows. If you install windows after Linux, you need to boot with a live distro afterwards and update grub.

When I was in uni, I had the time and motivation for GNU/Linux meme. The moment I finished first two semesters filled with Java and entered the world of C was my final push to *nix systems.

Everything was easier on my Linux Mint than the Windows counterpart. When work was done, I still booted the Windows to do gamez like any manchild does.

I managed to make custom W7 iso so I could install it on my newest PC game machine at home, but I swear to god W7 are my last windows. I hope the time I get new hardware which isn't supported by W7, the GPU pass-through will be as easy as

Try Mint.
Cinnamon is the DE for you.

Unity and Gnome 3 are the Win8 of the Linux world.
Thank tux we can change our DE in the OS and we have multiple other DEs.

Also try XFCE and iceWM fuck I bet you can even install them in Ubunto and switch between them.

Also friendly not Ubunto sends everything you type to companies.
Ubuntu is now the Windows10 of linuxes.
The best thing about the GPL world is you can simple change to another distro and everything works.
So if a companies starts doing shit you can:
a) Find a distro that stays to the old true version (mint forked from Ubuntu after they started doing shit)
b) remove this shit temperamentally form the OS (requires some skill)
>>
When I bought a used thinkpad, that had Windows 7, and my having switched out the HDDs for an ssd for a few days caused the OS on the original hdd to corrupt

I installed Ubuntu and never went back. It literally works, and all the errors that happens on other Linux distros don't occur on Ubuntu. The bad about Ubuntu? I realize that the reason everything on it works perfectly is because canonical basically said a big fuck you to everyone else, making sure that their OS has the best everything. They are like the Microsoft of the Linux world in a way. I don't hate them or anything because you can still install Ubuntu for free, I'm just saying that I realize what is up

You should honestly try Solus. I went from funtoo to gentoo to solus (after the xorg-1.19.0 fuck up, where the devs greenlighted xorg-server without the modules and broke a shit ton of systems) and despite having systemd, it's THE best binary distro bar none, both performance and stability wise. Unsurprisingly so, since the lead dev works for Intel's ClearLinux division and uses the same patches.
Gentoo is still king despite that major fuckup because I love portage and openrc is pretty nice although I still think they could easily make what systemd should have been (a fast, parallelized, simplified init system).

>but isn't solus being forced here because the dev browses this place?
Ikey doesn't browse here. Solus started as a meme and I fell for it because I was mad at the gentoo team for being careless and breaking my system. I'm glad that I fell for it. It has almost no 32-bit libraries (although they can easily be installed) and it uses most of Clear Linux optimisations. It will involve a bit of relearning, because it's a stateless Linux system (as per Clear Linux's documentation), but other than that, it's really good. The packages are compiled with -O3 and glibc has Clear Linux's patches, so you're essentially getting the same performance boost as a Gentoo user would get (minus the control of the USE flags), or those that compile their own software.

https://dev.solus-project.com/T503

So far, the only fuck up was a Mesa release that didn't work on GCN 1.0 GPUs like my 280x. Driver would crash before starting X. The fix was commandline only, and only required you to use the package manager to roll back the upgrade.

but those greedy corporate picfuckers that run microsoft thinks i should have to pay a premium just because i wanted to make the PCs around be run good, too bad, it was their loss because instead of using and advocating microsoft windows i switched to Linux and i still advocate and promote the use of Linux because it is free FOSS GNU/GPL software< Stallman and Torvalds basically gave the computer back to the people instead of it being held for a ransom by greedy corporate pigfuckers
