Anyone here work in the security sector? Pen testing? I have a friend of a friend who says their firm is hiring. I'm a Mathematics graduate. I can code, have a few projects to show on my github, which are in C, python, and bash scripts. Also have some Docker stuff I've worked on.
Any projects related to pen testing I should tackle? Some cryptography stuff I should work out to make my CV look better?

One of my professors is a pen tester, I think they care a lot about certifications, which proves you know your shit.
Try CTFs.

Not wholly true. Certification more usefully addresses the employers need to practise CYA when hiring a role so sensitive that likely no one in the company is capable of providing effective oversight: we hired X who is known by Y and has been through process Z
Contrast: how many l33t h4ckaz find corporate employment after being tumbled for practising their shit. Nothing like all of them
