Are "learn to code" apps like the ones from sololearn any good if I want to learn some basic skills? Anyone had experience with these or others?
just read a book
no. they are monkey see, monkey do apps. get some good books (and don't ask me for recommendations like a fag)

I used solo learn to learn c++ before doing a games programming course at university... For the first two terms everything I learnt, coding wise, I'd already covered on sololearn... So yes it's good for understanding the syntax of a language and basic programming logic.

This. In my experience atleast.
Go for a MOOC instead, OP:
This is for total noobs(Java): http://mooc.fi/courses/2013/programming-part-1/
This is more dificult but also for beginners(C): http://mooc.fi/courses/2016/aalto-c/en/

The rest would be just math and formal logic, right?

I think I'll use it in combination.
