Thinking of getting my very first chinkphone. My last two phones were a Moto G and a Samsung Galaxy Rugby pro. I'm ready for something much, much better.
At the moment I'm with AT&T but I'm thinking of switching to Verizon. I've read the sticky, done a little research, and I think I know what I want, but I want to hear what you /g/uys recommend before I buy anything.

My frontrunners right now are the Xiaomi Mi5 and the Redmi Note 4. Is Xiaomi really memefone or are they decent? Is there anything else I should consider?

Any HTC10 users here use a custom ROM? How the fuck do I update firmware myself? Please help

I've got a 3.5 year old galaxy s4 with cm13 on it that does what I need it to do, except camera is a bit sub par.

I've had a Samsung s4 mini since it came out early 2013.

Shit's been bitching till this summer

Dropped it at least once a day and the screen cracked just a little bit on a corner after 2 years of abuse. And it's still functional, albeit not the fastest

Best way to control app permissions?
Have a chink root on 5.1 but I don't want it interfacing with the network at all.

I killed my last phone so I'm looking to pick up one or two over Christmas. I basically want one I can use and another I can trust.

For the former, I'm going for either the Galaxy S7 or the Google Pixel. They seem about matched spec-wise and there's not an awful lot of difference in price, but the wiki seems to rate Google Nexus' above Samsung Galaxies. Does this still hold true for the Pixel?

For the latter, I'm looking at a Galaxy Nexus so I can install Replicant on it, and then possibly a Nokia N900 at some point too so I can get a Neo900 board in it when that comes out.

Recently? What? Western movies and TV shows started popping up as .mkvs ever since they started being available in 720p and 1080p. When did BR come out, in 2006 or 2007 or some shit? I don't think I've ever downloaded any sort of video 720p or higher in a container other than .mkv, it's been around for about a decade, there's nothing recent about it. Nowadays I have a Lumia 950 with a matte plastic back that has the same kind of soft-touch feel as the lid on my Thinkpad, and it's the nicest feeling phone I've ever had. Seriously. It's a mixed bag of love and hate, really.

Starting with the good, there's the hardware and most of the software. Hardware-wise, it is everything I could want it to be. UHS-1 microSD slot, removable battery, a USB-C port that isn't wired for fucking USB 2.0 like we've seen on a lot of other phones with full support for nice things like DisplayPort/HDMI over USB-C and transfer speeds exceeding 70 MB/s from the phone's internal storage when connected to a USB 3.0 port, super AMOLED screen, absolutely based camera (pic related), the aforementioned awesome plastic back, and the list goes on. I cannot for the life of me find a phone with more appealing hardware, and the few that get close are too huge.

Software-wise it's been a bumpy road, and this is where I have a love/hate relationship with it. I love the overall look and feel of Windows Phone 10, the way it uses pure black backgrounds in almost everything looks very nice on the AMOLED screen, and the vertical list-type start menu is a great change from the usual grid of icons, much easier to find apps in.

It was all really buggy at first when I got my phone back in January. WP10 was released too early, and it earned it a rightfully bad reputation. The 950/950 XL should have been released with WP8.1 with an optional upgrade to WP10. But MS seemed to work pretty hard on getting updates out and fixing the many and varied issues, and over the next many months I saw a lot of very frequent improvements.
For a while, I even had this very well integrated thing called "messaging everywhere" that allowed me to send and receive texts from my phone via my PC. That was great, and it worked flawlessly. Right until MS outright removed this feature in favor of... Adding it to Skype, which they (as far as I know) still have not done 6 months later. They had something that worked perfectly and they trashed it.

Lately, it's gone backwards with updates, the latest one introduced a lot of instability. Annoying. TBC.

So, I've had a few complaints here and there regarding the software during my time with this phone.
I won't go into past complaints cause there are too many small ones to bother and this is already TL;DR af.

Current complaints include...
Sometimes, when I want to wake my phone from standby, it fails to turn the screen on. I have to press the power button to put it back in standby and then I can wake it up. Thankfully it doesn't happen all the time, otherwise this would just be infuriating.
Occasionally, starting the camera app from standby by holding the camera button is fucked. Either by the same issue with failing to turn the screen on, or just giving me the lock screen instead of the camera app, requiring me to unlock the phone before using the camera. It's not consistent about this. Most of the time it works as you'd expect and takes me straight to the camera, but there's a chance just does one of those two as well.
The messaging app used to have nice different colours for different contacts, as well as having the first letter of the contact in the circle where a contact image would otherwise be. These have all been replaced with a generic grey icon with nothing to tell them apart. Why ? I have no idea. It was never mentioned in any release notes.
Groove Music is overall a pretty nice music player. When it doesn't take goddamn ages to register new tracks. Granted, I have 15.3k of them, but still. There's no way to force it to check for new tracks, I can only wait for it to do it automatically which can easily take up to 15 minutes at this point. Oh, and it can't have playlists with more than 1000 tracks. Fuck. But aside from that it's nice.
While on the subject of waiting, it takes a good while for the photos app to register new photos too.
Outlook STILL sucks dick at rendering emails on the small phone screen.
Windows Store is unstable as all hell, and very often fails to update apps.

I think that's about it for complaints right at this moment.
