I have about a thousand FLAC files that I want to transcode and a 9 year old laptop that shuts off due to overheating whenever I try. Will adding a sleep 10 to the end of my for loop stop this or will it only limit the amount of files I can transcode before it passes out again?

clean the fan you buttfucker
It's december, run the bitch outside

start transcoding the files then chuck the laptop in the freezer

Limit the maximum processor state in power options.

This. On my Linux laptop, I lowered the CPU frequency while converting videos.

Clean the fan AND cap your CPU.
Use Spotify and buy a new laptop
to postpone cleaning dust out of my machine last time it started getting too hot, i just wrote a script which lowered the frequency when it got too hot

Clean the fan. Unless your laptop was poorly designed or you're placing it on a surface that helps retain heat, then it shouldn't be overheating.

here's one methodwhile true; do if [ $(cat /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:18.3/hwmon/hwmon1/temp1_input) -gt 55000 ]; then pkill -STOP ffmpeg; else; pkill -CONT ffmpeg; fi; sleep 1; done
(change the temperature file path and "ffmpeg" to suit)
this just checks to see if the temp is over 55C, and "pauses" ffmpeg if it's over, and "continues" if it's under
it should effectively cause the cpu to hover around that temperature

Do them one at a time
