Are mechanical keyboards just a memay, /g/?
I'm using a fairly old membrane Logitech keyboard. I can type really fast and stay accurate, it's good for gayming as well. What would I gain after switching to mechanical keyboard besides gay RGB lightning?
>>
Clicky/lots of tactile feedback when you type
Lots of switch options
Looks cool
Last long time
Can swap out the keys to anything you like

Mine has a simple white backlight, I just like my red switches m8. Magicforce 68 master race!
>>
>>58044319
Its a pure meme. A friend of mine upgraded from his membrane old logitech($20) to a new RGB mechanical keyboard $100.

Other than the "kewl" RGB lighting effects and some functionality like macro/etc, its the same shit.

Oh right, its noisy.
>>
>>58044319
Memers will tell you it's worth it and that you have no idea what you're missing until you try one.
I spent a good amount of money on a mechanical a few years ago and my experience for gaming was the same, and I actually prefer membrane for typing.
They do look a lot cooler though

you mean noisy? Yeah, I'll pass

why

irrelevant, membrane keyboard can look cool as well

my membrane keyboard has lasted me 10 years and still going strong

>Can swap out the keys to anything you like
you already said that in #2, again why

>Mine has a simple white backlight
mine too

There is a reason that most keyboards today are made with membrane keys. It is because the difference is negligible
>>
>>58044319
If you can get a quiet one go for it. I think browns are suppose to be pretty silent. Otherwise its noisy as fuck. I can hear my roomate typing through a closed door with music on.

>>
Its like having a shit Xbox controller or a good one. The mechanical keyboard is just better
>>
>>58044319
If your a gaymer not much. Gaymers don't do much typing at the end of the day, and that's where mechs shine. Beyond that it's all personal preferences. I use both, and as long as I'm not doing something that requires typing for long periods then I use whatever.
>>
Its technically a better product because of how long they last. Realistically though, people just like saying "mechanical" and the marketing hype around it.
>>
>>58045047
They don't actually last any longer than regular keyboards.

It depends on the switch if it's noisy or not, blues are loud and clicky, browns, reds and blacks not so much. You can dampen any switch with o-rings too.

Lots of switch options is good because you can find what feels good to you instead of what Logitech thinks feels good to you.

Okay

Switch doesn't mean the keycaps, I mean you can replace the caps themselves. The switches are below and what give the feel when typing. See pic, that's a keycap replacement. If you don't know the difference between the switches or keycaps then I don't know what to say to you.

Okay

Sounds like you're just out to confirm your own bias and justify your $10 Logitech so whatever

I went from a G15v2 to an RK-9000 and now to an HV-KB378L, The difference in quality as far as typing is pretty big. I tried typing on the old G15v2 the other day and I never noticed how terrible it felt, not in "mushy" terms, but the actuation on mechanical keyboards is so much smoother. The Logitech stems tend to grab, like they needed to be oiled/greased (which is possible after so many years, it works fine otherwise).

Aside from that, you get more customization out of a mechanical by being able to swap out caps and (in some cases) switches. They're certainly more durable, and I personally like the clicky feedback, though I can understand why some people would hate it.

Try one and see how you like it, and remember you don't always need meme lights, but they're cheaper than custom keycap color sets, and you can change them at will and do other neat stuff.

MAN, that keyboard is awesome. Source?

You sure about that m8y?

ITT: Poorfag rationalisations

Mech keyboards start at $35 now with great quality choices in the budget range, even poorfags on their cum stained 10 year old Logitech can get in on it.
>>
>>58045680
If you're tearing the membrane, you're abusing it enough to destroy a mechanical keyboard five times over. There's also no option for waterpoof mechanical keyboards, unlike membranes.
>>
>>58045497
Yeah, I brain farted with the kay caps. I still don't get why you'd want to replace key caps.

I might be biased because the mechanical keyboards thingamajig just doesn't seem to be worth the extra money for me, especially since I have no problem with my current keyboard except for it being worn out.
>>
>>58045747
>waterproof
All you do is take the keycaps off, wash them in the sink, air blast the board and maybe alcohol wipe it. Even major coffee spills can't kill a mech switch.

>>58045767
People switch the keycaps out for the same reason they rice their desktop. Aesthetics. Plus some caps have advantages like PBT keycaps which don't wear out and don't attract key shine at all. Plus budget keyboards come with shitty gamer font so changing that for a nicer font keycap is a nice bonus.

If you like your membrane then whatever but mechs are cheap now so the price thing isn't part of their meme.
>>
>>58045680
A new membrane keyboard costs as much as a switch.
>>
>>58045833
They may not kill the switches, but they'll still damage the PCB. Have fun replacing that.
>>
>>58045888
No it doesn't, I've had lots of major spills and nothing has killed the PCB. Keyboards in general are easy to clean, not just membrane. The waterproof meme ones are just marketing to idiots who don't know you've been able to put pretty much any keyboard in the dishwasher for decades.
>>
>>58045918
You this deep down, but posting lies on the internet won't magically turn back time and win Hillary the election.
>>
>>58045944

Okay m8 I don't have to justify anything about mech keyboards to an underager.

Is there a term I can search for that refers to the kind of keyboard that are flat and flush across the body? Like the key switches aren't sunken into the body.
>>
>>58044319
I bought an AULA F2012 for $26 with blue mx switches and feels way better to type in comparison to the old membrane keyboard i had, also has the bonus of no LEDs or ricer/gaymen shit.

But yeah i wouldn't spend more than $30 for a mechanical keyboard.

floating keycaps or sometimes just floating keys

I prefer the feel. When I have to use a membrane keyboard now, it just feels mushy and shitty.

Spending a shit ton on one is a meme though. I got a chink one for 35$ and I'm very happy with it.

Magicforce. Search it in Amazon. $40. It's really good. The keys float up like that due to the switches.
>>
>>58046133
My bad, it was $45. This one:

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01I1N6N3U/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The one on Amazon.com is probably cheaper since our currency is in the shitter.

They make a backlit version too, if you're into that.

The switches are solderless, so you can change the switches if you want, but I don't care about that.
>>
>>58046048
>>58046105
This, overspending because of autism is the meme.
>>
>>58046133

There are lots of options for chink shit like tomoko, e-element/e-eagle, magiforce, and royal kludge.

>>58046133
I guess this one?

$35 and water resistant. Not bad honestly if you are a poorfag
>>
>>58046185
>>58046198
is there a cheap one with cherry red or brown?
>>
>>58046198
There are plenty of cheap chink ones out there, Motospeed Inflictor, Ajazz, Lolita Spyder, Pok3r (higher range budget), Choc Mini and Magicforce etc. For what it's worth Magicforce is great and one of the few cheapo mechs /mkg/ approve of. And they're maximum autistic about this.
>>
>>58046229

No. Cherry switches are much more expensive than the clones used in these boards.

For reds or browns, you're better off looking for Gateron switches. They have much smoother action than modern Cherry due to newer tooling and different materials.

If you want cheap cherry switches you have to go after cash registers like the g80 POS, which honestly aren't that bad of a deal since you get vintage cherry doubleshots.

Otherwise you have to go after knockoffs like kailh.
