Still struggling with:

How do I make aimp work like other music players that don't insta close the track they played just now? I have to click the play button to see the soundwave and coverart again, after the song finished playing.

Anons last attempts in fixing this:

Will a scheduled Windows update wake my computer from sleep on W10? Noticed it kept waking up until I eventually just decided to shut it down right before I was going to go to bed. Not sure if it was some misconfigured peripheral that was getting input somehow (though I already have it set not to wake from mouse movements so it's not that) or if it was a scheduling thing.
>>
>>58012080
Oh nevermind, just answered my own question, found the "Reboot" task on Task Scheduler which was indeed set up to wake the computer from sleep, now this has been fixed.

See if it's saved in google cache or archive.org or something similar, I guess. Though I'm not 100% certain that those services won't try to load some assets from the live server, so be cautious.
>>
>>58013000
if you must, you can download the single page from a service like archive.org with wget
when used correctly, it won't download any thing other than the individual file (which is sourced on the archive)

then you can skim the source for stuff like assets or javascript
if it's simple enough, you'll be able to get the content from the one file alone

>download a FOSS program
>it tells me to run ./configure as the first step

How do i know the configure script isn't malicious?
How do i know which files on the system are changed?
How do i know which services are installed/modifed by running this script?

Same question for "apt-get install" and other scripts.

On windows, i just download and compile a portable version of something, and run it inside a folder.
>>
>>58015100
there's nothing a configure script can do that a portable windows program can't
>>
>>58015100
>How do i know the configure script isn't malicious?
How about looking at the configure script you retard?
>>
>>58015150
Except messing with system files is not considered malicious in linux. Like modifying the path variable or adding a cronjob.
If its required for the program to run, its not considered malicious.
Which means even if its a FOSS program, you can't trust it not to change anything without asking for permission first.

Now for a portable windows application which is also open source, modifying anything outside the folder it is run in IS considered malicious, and so doesn't happen.

en-gb_windows_10_enterprise_2015_ltsb_n_x64
>>
>>58015334
Also, just because they don't usually touch crontab or env variables, doesn't mean they can't. It's perfectly reasonable to expect a script that installs something to do both if its justified. And the only way you can see if it happens is by going through the source code yourself. But see >>58015242

This is mainly why i hate linux. Its basically an OS where you run scripts and hope nothing breaks.

I realize thinkpads are the /g/ meme laptops, but what about other kinds like elitebook/probook/latitude and such? Are they somehow worse than thinkpads, since thinkpads get an entire thread to themselves?
>>
>>58015485
Yes, not because it could be malicious, but because i simply don't know which files are changed and accessed by the program.
And there is no way to know unless you read through the thousands of lines of code.
You run the script, and hope for the best.

The ssh server was just a simple example. Spin up a VM, and try running anything without running some sort of a script.
Or at least, figure out which files exactly the program you're running is modifying and accessing.

All you can do is just throw applications together in the same system and let the scripts do their thing.
>>
>>58015567
That they are a meme doesnt mean they are bad, just lots to talk about and popular devices/things.

>>
>>58015567

Thinkpads get a thread to themselves because they are high end work laptops and refurbished are a third of the price and have great linux support
Compare a T420/x220 refurb with an equivalents Dell's price

Pretty much the only upgrade you need to buy is an SSD

So latitudes are a-okay as well to get? Because I recently got to handle a latitude E6420 and an EliteBook 8470p at my internship and I quite liked them. I've got to admit, I like the metal looking cases a bit better than the all-black thing thinkpads have going on.

>>58015667
I probably should mention I'm in mainland EU, so thinkpad prices are fairly similar to Latitude prices with similar components.

I'm just unclear on wether Latitudes are as easy to replace parts and have as good Linux support or not. I'd assume so, but I'm a bit of an idiot so I'd rather not take any chances. Battery life is also somewhat important, but I'd think that they're kind of similar among all kinds of work laptops.

I need to run a .bat file from the command prompt from the recovery environment, but I don't get a "repair computer" key option in the post screen so I have to run the windows 7 installer from my USB drive and do it from there

I'm trying to set the boot priority to the USB drive, but it's not working. I put the usb drive icon first in the list but it won't stay highlighted, it's like it's not being detected. I tried disabling the main drive and that resulted in some of the scariest minutes of my life as shit got fucked up and I had to fiddle with things to be able to run windows again

Buy a domain from whatever registrar you want (I used Google Domains). It should be $12/year or less, unless you want a really short .com.

If you use google domains, you can create an email alias at that domain and connect it to your gmail. Then you can send & receive using a unique email, but from your same old account.

As far as hosting, why don't you set up your own server? I can't imagine you'll be getting more than one or two concurrent users, so even a RaspberryPi can handle it. Run it headless so you don't waste resources.
If you need more than 100MB/s, OrangePi, BananaPi, ODROID, etc, all offer gigabit ethernet ports.
The cheapest webhost you'll find is still going to run you ~$10/month. Not worth it unless you expect to make money and have real traffic on the site.

Setting up wordpress on an RPi is super easy, but there are some cheap hosts if you're uncomfortable doing it yourself.

I've never used it, but Siteground seems pretty good for a beginner. Only $4/month and they'll give you a .com with that if you sign up for a year. Plus, it seems to have tons of noob friendly tools.

Do a little looking around on the hosting side and see what you find.

I know I'll never have many visitors (it's pretty much a longform CV turned into an interactive site), so I didn't feel like paying for hosting.
If you want to learn, it's pretty fun to mess around with imo.

The this windows isnt genuine message starts to lock you out things.

If you ever are in full screen it will kick you back to desktop.

Hey guys.
So, here at work we use a website to process phone payments.
I'd much rather use Chrome than Edge, which is what we use for whatever reason, but I can't because Chrome doesn't want to print my receipts. The website just doesn't see any printers.
Left is Chrome, right is Edge.
Any ideas?

Okay I'm this guy again, this time not asking for help but rather just an answer

The reason I needed to boot from the USB and run the windows installer was so I could run a reset.bat file that would delete some registry entries in order to reset the slmgr -rearm (the command that gives you another 30 days of trial period) count.

Okay so I did that and the .bat file worked and everything, BUT after restarting I still got the "your windows isn't genuine" message and applying the slmgr -rearm command wasn't working. And then I installed some Windows updates and for some reason the count is reset now and I'm back on trial period.

tl;dr installing 1 update made the changes made by the .bat file apply

Why would that happen?

I have a generic usb laser mouse (no custom driver) that's been working perfectly for the last 10 months or something. I'm used to hibernating my PC, a windows 7, so it boots faster. Last night I decided to turn it off like I usually do every week or so.
Today the mouse is fucked up. Same desk, same pad, same everything, but lifting it a centimeter off the desk sends the pointer in random directions, as fast as one side of the screen to the other in a fraction of a second. Keeps doing so indifinetely. Leaving the mouse upside down does too. Leaving it just sitting on the desk tho, is completely fine
I'm a fucking iliterate, so I just took a can of compressed air, blew it directly at the lens, but didn't fix anything. Then I opened it, blew directly on the sensor, but nothing. You know how the led light goes into a low state when you're not moving it for a second, and gets brighter as soon as it moves? The thing stays bright 100% of the time when being lifted, with nothing but two meters of air between the closest solid surface and the sensor.

I have my computer speakers connected to my monitor via a 3.5mm cable rather than directly to my tower's audio output. My PC is connected to the monitor via HDMI. I'm doing this because I have two game consoles connected to the same monitor via HDMI so when I switch video inputs the audio seamlessly outputs via the same speakers.

Stupid question: by going PC -> Monitor -> Speakers rather than PC -> Speakers, am I getting considerably worse audio quality by letting the monitor be the middleman?

Babby-Tier: (Everything works out of the box, maybe some command line magic)
Linux Mint
Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Ubuntu MATE
PCLinuxOS
ZorinOS
Eventually Mageia, but the updates tend to be a little unstable after release
Korora

Beginner Tier: (May have to install non-free drivers or get multimedia codecs from third parties)
openSUSE
Sabayon
Antergos and Manjaro
Debian
Fedora (lacks many proprietary drivers)
Solus (wait until 2017 or 2018, when there'll be more packages available)
Deepin

ALWAYS check user reviews, forums and the compatibility of your hardware before installing a Linux distro

I know /g/ isn't for tech support but I'm having an issue that no amount of googling is addressing.

While browsing the web/watching a movie on my Dell XPS 13 the screen suddenly got extremely bright and then the computer crashed. Upon restart the monitor showed the login screen but it was distorted and neither the mouse nor keyboard registered as working. Even trying a hard reset didn't work and it boots as though it was asleep (i.e. split-second as opposed to 10 seconds or so) to the same screen. If you hold the laptop close to your ear it emits a high-pitched whine and also emits a static/crackling sound. I've ordered a mini-display port to hdmi cable to see if its a monitor issue, but that won't arrive until tomorrow. Based on the fact that the whine/crackling is coming from the exhaust vent area I'm assuming it's a more serious issue.

Is there anything I can check now to see what the issue is? I've tried taking the back panel off, but it's pretty firmly attached even after removing the screws and I'm wary of forcing it off. It's not covered under warranty any more, and if I do have to send to back for repair, I absolutely must get everything off the SSD and wipe it. Is there any way to recover the data on the SSD and then wipe it if the monitor isn't working and it doesn't appear as though any inputs from the keyboard works either?

former;

precompiled:
- may be a smaller download
- will install faster
- stuck with whatever features were chosen by the maintainer
- likely built with lowest-common-denominator, generic cpu features

Very inexperienced when regarding processor choice, everything I hear about nowadays is either AMD or Intel (i5 and i7)

My sister needs a laptop to work (mostly just writing on word). Of course, she will browse the internet, watch some videos, etc, but that's about it. It needs to be really cheap and not die in the first year.

Do you have any recommendations? My current options so far.

She doesn't need anything more powerful than i3. Could even get job done with a celeron and stuff like that. Couple of gigs of RAM and she has everything she needs, bigger concern should be keyboard and screen. I think its always best if you get new stuff rather than used.

pretty much anything
i would personally look at a second hand business thinkpad/dell/etc, and put an ssd in it if it has none, and more ram if it's <4GB

the main concerns should be physical robustness and battery life, in this case. unless the machine is more than about 6 years old, it will handle those tasks no problem, especially with an ssd

Used Thinkpad, X220 exactly.

For what are you going to use it?
>>
>>58019094
Well, how long should a Thinkpad battery last for it to be considered a good buy? A T410 just caught my eye and the seller says it's up to 2 hours. Seems lacking...
>>
>>58019197
1. Thinkpad CPUs dont are as efficient as recent CPUs.
A I5-2500m will use much more energy than a I5-6500U.

2. Its probably using a Chinese 6 cell battery.

Ok so I downloaded a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit from a website provided by one of the redditor stores.

I threw the file into MD5 & SHA checksum tool and received some hashes. The hashes do not match the ones listed in the install gentoo wiki, however when I search them up on google I find links to windows 7 downloads.

So....is it legit?

So you bought that high performance cpu and a hefty amount of ram, just so you can not use it?

Your system is responding to the things you are telling it to do, and when it responds, it uses resources.

Why didnt you get an old pentium 1ghz and 512mb of ram?

TL;DR USING RESOURCES IS A GOOD THING

Guys, would the Atom Z3735F actually be acceptable)? I can see it has great power efficiency. It would be the simple choice and the laptop would come with a 2 year warranty. The only downside is the 2GB memory, which I doubt is upgradeable.

I've been checking out some thinkpads, which really look good for the price, but have half of the battery life and the CPU is just a bit better (Intel-Core-i5-2520M).

Forgot to mention, a light laptop is a plus.

(As for Readwrite) If I get my Wii u a 1TB SD card, would it work with games fine? Like an SSD?

I was told it would stop reading way before a normal HDD

same thing but 3DS too? I want to get a 128GB MSD for my 3DS at some point.

Now, I know that the Wii U can use an alternative storage to it's own 20 gbs but it has to be formated to it.

What do you guys know?

Since I've switched to linux and don't play games this massive fuck off tower gaming pc seems pointless, thinking of selling it and building a micro atx build, is there any way to work out how much I should sell it for and should I install windows 7 or 10 on it before selling?

So I've bought into the Ultrabook meme and have been looking at machines to buy

I've spotted the Asus UX360UA for around £600, i5, 3200x1800 screen, good ports, 128GB SSD.

The one everyone wanks over is the HP Spectre x360 though, and that's retailed at £900, has a 1920x1080 screen that is actually worse than the Asus in not only resolution, a worse hinge but 256GB SSD

My question is, where the hell does the gap in price come from? I've seen both in person, the Asus seems like a better machine but it just doesn't look as slick

Something just feels off about paying less for what seems like more, what's the catch?
>>
>>58020214
I don't think you read my question proper or maybe I'm not understanding you, It'll be harder to sell a pc running linux so I'm asking if I should install windows 7 or windows 10 before selling it
>>
>>58020229
two possibilities the asus is realistically priced and the hp is overpriced or the asus is cheap because it's got lower build quality etc.
>>
>>58020229
HP thinks they are all that and a bag of durritos that's why.

>>58020241
Well ok, I'd say if you want to sell the PC to install 10. NOW the reason behind this is because most people already see 7 as obsolete or put 8.1 which is most computers still. But if you're selling it to a normie, 8.1 is fine desu senpai.
>>
>>58020283
yea I figured to go 10 or 8.1 normies don't care if it violates your privacy - I'll just put whatever I can get cheaper on it
>>
>>58020301
I've tried to explain to people why Linux is a good alternative to older PCs but it's impossible so normally windows is fine. I'm on 7 and will stay with it as long as possible. 8.1 is alright.

I stick with the whole "I'm not doing anything technically illegal why should I care what they see?"

If I've not got a knock at my door yet, then I think I'm in the clear
>>
>>58020262
The thing is I saw them side by side and honestly, the hinge on the Asus was sturdier than the one on the HP.

Is Build quality really that significant a factor? The HP seems to be good if everyone sings its praises, I've had two Asus's fail on me but for some reason still hold them in high regard.

How low are we talking here? I'm spending £800, would rather avoid failures

Which one do you think it's better? I'll mainly use it for gaming and movies/music. I'm on a tight budget so I don't have lots of options.

This headphones are the HyperX Stinger and the Sentey Arches

That won't be a thing if you have to deal with their CS.

No experience with Sentey but HyperX is garbage across the board.

If 50ish is your budget check out Plantronics 780/788/400HS. I had a pair of 780s that lasted me 4 years.
