Cool thread

But there totally are competitors! You can choose to overpay for cable or overpay for DSL!

this is the result of monopolies

The speeds are shit though, and not worth the money. Can google fiber even hit all areas? I live in a tech center in Colorado, why is the internet so fucking slow?

Also, what do you guys think about internet ads targeting people, is everyone affected by this or social media followers?

Just guessing, but does the size and distance between population centers mean more infrastructure and inherently lower speeds? Transmitting information from New York to LA would take longer and involve more cabling than between 2 servers in Worst Korea.

No, it's because of lower population density outside of cities. In cities, it's a pain in the ass to upgrade shit. Also the companies are lazy and corrupt and use both of those as excuses to not upgrade a goddamn thing.

We'll I'm sure if we lived on top of each other in urban hell holes like in the EU we could have fiber everywhere. Don't know if you've looked at a map recently but America is pretty big.

Australia has the same struggle to an even worse degree. Not many ISPs want to run 200 miles of fiber to hook up a population of 15,000 so 100 nerds that live there can torrent hentai faster.

That's nice. I don't even use the internet anymore except to browse shithole image boards like this and pirate music. Sometimes I'll also visit Wikipedia or do a Cuck Cuck Go search for something I need info on. The internet is 99% cancer now and a good 80% of that requires heavy JS that totally ruins your browsing experience. I use Lynx which is a text browser to view most stuff on my Librebooted T400. New web is mostly crap.

I had 1Gbps fiber in my Manhattan apartment for $50/month. I had 2Mbps (When it was working...) internet in a small town outside of Roubaix, France.

It's really dependent on the industry and demand in your local area and not the country.
>>
Are you retarded?
The internet in the states is flying compared to Australia.
>>
>>57991259
yeah there needs to be some legal work done to combat the regional monopolies but the old farts in congress don't know how the internet works so we're at the situation we're at
>>
>>57991259
Basically it works like this:
>America invents internet in 1960's
>First lines start connecting universities and government agencies up through to the 80's
>90's Internet boom; nation-wide infrastructure is built
>Next two decades, new lines and connections are built on top of existing ones, because it's cheaper than replace outright
>It's almost 2017 now and out network is built on tech that's at times over 30 years old
>Third-world countries like Romania, which were late to the game, have the newest servers and data lines, allowing for super-fast internet at dirt prices.

1. Ericsson made fiber optics 70-90s
2. We had a state monopoly until 1992 - Televerket

Since Ericsson was the pride of Sweden, the state gave them orders for fiber optic infrastructure to fill their pockets. We even had so much fiber that they started laying it down outside of Sweden, when the monopoly was removed three companies was created; Telia (ISP), Skanova (Fiber owner) and Telia International Carrier. Telia is the largest owner of fiber in the world, owning most of the transatlantic cables and backbones in Europe - all thanks to Sweden trying to make Ericsson look good.

>>
>>57995948
Assuming you are correct, which you're not (see >>57996921)

The United States has much more land than Europe. Texas in itself is larger than Germany. Thus when data centers are in one corner of the continent, it's easier for data to pass through, focusing on less total infrastructure and more on the quality of infrastructure

>>
>>57997054
Electrons are slow, electric current is fast. Go ask your 4th grade science teacher to slap your bitch ass, Eurofaggot.
>>
>>57997054
>The word electricity refers generally to the movement of electrons (or other charge carriers) through a conductor in the presence of potential and an electric field. The speed of this flow has multiple meanings. In everyday electrical and electronic devices, the signals or energy travel as electromagnetic waves typically on the order of 50%–99% of the speed of light, while the electrons themselves move (drift) much more slowly.
Speed difference is negligible, it might as well be instantaneous over small distances, a few seconds between either side if the Earth.

You want the honest truth?

This entire cluster fuck of infrastructure was self induced. Local municipalities here in the states should have been (and in some cases did) create a fiber backbone. The only problem was they didn't have the funds to light it up and become an ISP. So they signed non compete clauses to get comcrap and medicom to come in and lay coax everwhere so people could get "fast" internet. The big boys can actually sue cities for breech of contract of they light the fiber up so we all have to wait until the contact expires which, will not happen for quite some time as the media giants just keep pumping money into the local campagins. It's a fucking joke and Internet connectivity needs to be a public service.
