Currently have the AKG 550s and really need a headphone with more bass, I them but I think I need to look somewhere else.
Should I get the ATH-M50X or is there anything else anyone recommends around the 100-150 price bracket?

>>
>>57968562
Nah, M50x should be worth less. 7506 and V6 are more revealing, and the low end is less muddy. I'd take them for field monitoring any day over M50x. They're a lot more comfortable too.

>>57968692
Yes.

I bought the soundmagic xs after realizing how bad my onboard audio was compared to my phone. How badly did I screw up?
>>
Does anybody here know about turntable styli?
I'm getting a Philips table to replace my current one, and it comes with quite a high-end cart from the late '70s, a Philips GP412. It comes without a needle, though, and a NOS one is €60. I currently have an Ortofon Omega fitted with a Stylus 10, but it's kind of worn out. A new stylus for this cart would cost me €40.
Which stylus should I get? I mostly play second-hand (but well cared for) records.

Also a headphone-related question: Would a pair of Sony MDR-MA300 be an upgrade from PortaPros?

Nonono, the 400i is described as thin and too much treble compared tot he 400S, especially with the new pads. 400S is smoother and better for just music listening.

Does anyone have previous experience with the Gamecom 780? I've been using them for 5 years now and have been considering upgrading to something in the $200-300 price range. >>

400S has a mid-bass focus creating a slower, smoother bass in general. Overall, it is above in quantity throughout. The 400i gets much better depth and texturing. Impacts are tight with the 400i and thicker with the 400S.
The 400S is much smoother than the 400i overall. The 400i has more details than the 400S, likewise with clarity. Darker, lusher sound signature in the 400S comes out in vocals as well.
The 400i offers much more quantity up in the treble. There is an edginess to the 400i's treble which the 400S does fix up. The cost of this smoothness is indeed detailing and presence. The i offers more air at the highest highs over the 400S.

From frequency response and impressions seems like the 400s are basically 400i with a drop in low bass and lower quality build.

everywhere I look people shit on 400s
I remember people shitting on them here in the past as well

All right. It largely depends on the sound signature you're looking for. X2 is bassy, k7xx has "just enough" bass, but the highs are clearer. Both are pretty comfortable but X2 is heavier. X2 is easier to drive than the K7xx.
That's pretty much it. I personally like the X2 more because of the "fun" V-shape sound signature it has.

For airplanes, yes. Best ANC headphone is Bose QC. Their name literally means Quiet Comfort.
That said, a good set of isolating headphones can go a long way, and are typically a lot cheaper due to not needing any extra electronics. What is your budget though? For ~$100 USD I'd recommend Brainwavz HM5. Ultra comfy, and great isolation.

hey /hpg/
I bought these headphones 2 years ago for like $50
http://www.head-fi.org/products/incase-sonic-headphones

Mainly because the memory foam pads so I could wear them for a long time.

I bought my girlfriend some ath-m40x because she bitches about the laptop i gave her not having good speakers all the time.

I kinda want some newer headphones now and have spent some time looking at the AKG-k7XX(over the k702s because from what i read the k7xx have better pads and cups and are a teeny bit better despite being made in china)

http://www.head-fi.org/products/akg-k7xx

would buying these for around $200 be a good idea and provide a nice jump in quality?

Also, I've never had an amplifier or DAC. What amp do you recommend for these if I wanted to use these on my phone?
>>
I wear headphones for multiple hours a day, and those hours are typically passed consecutively

My budget is $60 max (ideally), what headphones can I get that won't hurt my ears?

only requirements are detachable cable and closed back

They are good headphones, however the made in china shit is irrelevant, AKG manufactures in china solely to cut down on labor costs, not manufacturing costs (lower quality materials).

AKGs made in Austria and Slovakia are indistinguishable from China manufactured AKGs in build quality and anyone saying otherwise is experiencing a massive placebo effect

Lint roller for hair, dust, and minor grease.

>>57974425
>I feel like that would give you inaccurate bass response.
Yes/no. The short version:
Leakage effects plagues designs to vary degrees and compromise bass extension.
Open or closed back does not explicitly imply anything about a seal, but closed backs are more likely to be sealed. Closed backs have a more uneven bass response, the effect of leakage is generally worse.
>>
>>57974872
You kind of can't. A good place to start would be to watch a lot of review videos.

Here are some suggestions:
Z Reviews [Long form, quite detailed. fun to watch. Plebbit as fuck but he's a good laugh.]
Tyll/Inner Fidelity [Headphone review elder god. Short and concise. Ironically enough his videos have audio quality.]
Lachlanlikesathing [Some asian Australian dude who rarely says anything too negative about headphones. Similar review style to Tyll]
Metal571 [Long form, he has a lot of knowledge but he's straight up boring to watch]
MrTechAgent [poo in loo, medium length. mostly reviews older/vintage headphones. he's pretty blunt and honest]

probably some more. ignore mkbhd, and all those general consumerism channels. they rarely know anything about good audio and are sometimes being paid for reviews.

Also read up on head-fi.

I thought Ultimate Ears was using 3D scans. In any case, I don't see how it isn't a simple affair to extend the molding at least to the concha and then work backwards computationally. This is disappointing, though I wouldn't expect any more from the tiny firms that make up the industry.

Without this compensation, the only advantage of CIEMs is a relatively constant seal and insertion depth - i.e. compromised, but in a consistent manner. Performance still varies between individuals for the same acoustic design, if no corrective EQ is used.

So my m50s somewhat degraded over 6 years and I'm looking for a new pair of headphones. Something good that will make another 2-4 years.

Popular models currently available over here:

ATH-M50X ($200-220)
AKG K 702 ($200-220)
ATH-MSR7 ($230-250)
MDR-1A ($200-220)
Momentum 2.0 Over-Ear ($180-200)
HD598 ($140)

What do you think about these models? Fucking reviews are so controversive.

I can order worldwide but delivery will take about a month since even if I order from Japan (that is only 100km away) the item will be first shipped to all the way to moscow and then sent all the way back to Vladivostok. And stuff get lost sometimes since our post service is fucked up. Do not want. Should I be looking for some other popular massmarket headphones?

the market in russia is pretty different from other places as far as I can tell, if not availability, pricing

at the price difference between m50x & msr7 scratch M50x off your list, they're worth half of msr7 with a stretch.

702 will need an amp most likely to get the most out of it, have a look into if you can get a k612 if you're interested in it though, it requires less power and has a bit more bass to compensate for the high treble but has no detachable cable. Though looking at your preferred sound signature, I doubt either of these will do it for you

1A are pretty respecable, but you're overpaying quite a bit

Momentum 2.0 are a meme

if you're interested in 598, see if you can get your hands on 558 instead, they're cheaper and have a different sound signature, which if you don't like, you can change to 598's with minimal effort

Out of this list, I'd say MSR7 is your best bet, you're overpaying a little bit, but not nearly as much as some of your other options and it's one of the best if not the best in the list.

If you can, see if you can also get your hands on XPT100/HM5 which should suit your preferred sound signature more

you sure they'd fit?
I have the 850s and they're pretty fucking big and round rather than oval
>>
>>57980179
They'll fit with a bit of stretching, Zeos got them on the 668B's and 669's (Samson SR950). I've also been recommended HM5's on my SR950's and plan to grab a pair for christmas.

suh niggas i want sum cheap earphones

i've been eyeing these:

memeBeats (the HTC model that came with the HTC One i believe?"
AYL bluetooth chinkphones
and brainwavz bluetooth nice looking chinkphones

are they any good? i don't need anything too spectacular.
>>
>>57980244
k612 has a bit more bass which makes their sound signature more palpable
they're a bit easier to drive
they're cheaper

BUT they don't have a detachable cable

The best is K7xx

Low volume and if you getting distortion at high volumes
>>
>>57980422
They have lots of everything
>>
>>57976756
with his budget he could go for ZMF pads and have ultra comfy
>>
>>57977505
Hyper X Cloud Cores, and then if you don't find them comfortable enough, get Brainwavz HM5 pads. They're pretty decent stock though. Excellent build.
>>
>>57977619
Any cheap power source is fine. I power microphones worth a couple thousand off my full 48v supply that I got from china for 16 AUD off ebay. Ask /csg. They know a lot about cheap shit.

Sr950 'fits' any AKG pad. They're /slightly/ smaller than the headphone, but not by much. Ive used K240 pads.
If not you could stretch HM5 pads over them. It's hard but I've done it on my modded 668b's.
The HM5 velours are comfier than AKG pads on them imo.
>>
>>57977785
In summer i do, because fuck wearing large over ears in Australian heat. Even open backs get warm. Otherwise as long as the headphone is properly padded, I find over ears vastly more comfortable, and better sounding.

Is the Magni 2 Uber worth £50 over the O2?
>>
>>57981111

No, unless you need more power i doubt you'll need it
>>
>>57981111
it looks cooler
otherwise probably not
only really reason is more power
hell, a DIY o2 or CMOY would probably do just as well for your use
>>
>>57981111
Magni 2 Uber when you receive it put on high gain with easy to drive iem or headphone and turn knob to 3o'clock noise floor central you're welcome.
>>
>>57981159
Could a CMOY drive a K612 as well as an O2?
>>
>>57981229
if using a proper supply, yes.
>>
>>57967995
So I'm getting the Philips Fidelio X2 for christmas. I heard about D/A Converters and AMP's, but I don't really know much about them, their functionality and if I need one. Could you explain it to me what they are and which one you recommend for me? For the X2: I want to use them at home but will use them for going to school too. I will use them for my Laptop(Asus GJ750JZ) and for my LG V10
>>
>>57981289
X2's are fairly efficient, so you are unlikely to need an amp alone. DAC's obviously convert didjits to magic electricity. Some do it better than others. An external DAC's first priority for purchase is to eliminate any signal noise from your onboard sound. It is often an issue with larger desktops. The second reason people buy them, is for straight up better sound. Onboard DACs can often be quite shit.

If you buy a standalone DAC, you need an amp with it, though nowdays its a lot more common to see DAC/Amp combos, like the E10k, Fulla 2, and SMSL M3, and so forth.

Amps just straight up make the signal louder. If your X2's are too quiet, or have break up/clipping/distortion at higher volumes you may need one, but I'd doubt it.

Also you're using an open back when going to school? Unless you walk to school on a fairly quiet route, you'd hear a lot of cars. Even worse if you take public transport.
>>
>>57981362
I only use In-Ears when going to school,
and yeah on public transport.
But I doubt it will be
much of a problem, because
it's (almost) always
quiet when I'm driving with the
train to school and back home.

And thanks for the explanation!
>>
>>57981289
I bought the Creative E3 DAC with the X2s so I can plug a second pair of headphones, works great. If you only listen to music alone I suggest the Fulla 2.
>>
>>57981362
>, you'd hear a lot of cars
That's actually good. I don't want to get hit by a car when crossing the street
>>
>>57967995
HD558's for £79? Yes or no?
>>
Can anyone recommend me a couple of price-worthy IEMs around the $30-40 mark? I listen to stuff like Shlohmo, Saltillo, Tycho etc but will mostly use them for listening to podcasts and audiobooks
>>
>>57981714
maybe
>>
>>57980422
Compare them to hd600's and they become hot muddy trash. They're a bit fun though and the build quality is incredible.
>>
>>57981111
m8 get an e10k. I've been there and done that, they sound exactly the same. Don't waste your money.

These are $130 m8 but they're the best by far at that price. Built like a tank and pretty comfy too. Possibly the best looking headphones available imo.

go mow some more lawns or sell some drugs across the border and get yourself a 770, if you think the treble is too strong, return them and get xpt100/HM5

Solely looking at comfort and durability I think 770s will be by far the best bet
>>
>>57982515
I've heard you need an amp to give these enough juice. Have I been memed? I ended up buying M50 instead because of that guy
>>
>>57982550
Don't need one but it would probably improve them. m50's and 770 are similar. I wouldn't worry about it.
>>
>>57982550
if you can, cancel it
he was most likely just posting it as a joke

we have a problem with guys recommending m50x to everything even though they're frowned upon

for the 32/80 ohm versions you wouldn't need one, for the 250 ohm version maybe

if you can't cancel or decide to go through with it, just straight up already buy some hm5 pads or something to save yourself the trouble of having to wait for them

si tienes quien te los pase del gringo tons unos m40x son mas o menos v-shape los 770 son mejores pero mas caros.
