Is a new entry level card really already twice as good as a flagship

I think that comparison is using the 7970's launch performance and not its current performance, since those numbers are far too far apart.
I'd recommend looking up some actual benchmarks instead of relying on that comparison software- those numbers definitely do not look right

I still use a 7950.

I don't play demanding games and I don't care about high/ultra settings.

Runs Civilization V, VI, BF4 and CS:GO just fine.

I don't really play super demanding either but I recently got a 4K monitor and the 7970 is stretching its limit. Usually have to play on low or medium quality. Still looks better than 1080p even without AA, but I'd like to take advantage of the shit I have.

In either case a radeon 7970 is easily outperformed by midrange cards just a year or two old, but in practice i had no problems running an r7 265 oc, i just replaced it when i started working on ue4 and needed more vram as 2 gb wasnt enough.

In the end it all depends on your budget and whether the other hardware is capable of supporting and not bottlenecking a new card as to whether the newer card will give you the benefits there.

The 280x is a rebranded 7970ghz card and I didn't get 30fps on fucking Witcher 3.
