A place I used to work for always has these Can Can Sales. Basically they mark down a bunch of store-brand canned vegetables and people save a large amount of money. It's a regular grocery store though so people aren't paying an annual membership to be there but with Costco or BJ's Warehouse, you're paying that fee for a better shopping experience.

Orkut did almost everything Facebook does today and had much better 'communities' system, literal mini-forums, even "chans" (with anonymous posting allowed) and basically only Brazil adopted it. It eventually died because of the memebook.
