Hey guys, I'm getting started with Android development. Can you guys give me some idea on what to build for my portfolio so I can find a job as an Android dev?

Also quick primer on Java for someone experienced with Obj-C and C?

Why would you need a portfolio for development? Don't have references or know people?

I don't. I'm quite experienced with programming but unemployed.

I'm trying to build a portfolio on github now so I can claim 3 years of experience and start job hunting.

Also, I don't even have an Android phone yet.
Phone recommendation would be appreciated, thanks.

Professional experience? It's expected that you bend the truth a little bit but that's taking it a bit too far unless you worked as an app developer for iPhone. In worst case take up a junior position.

Any google phone should suffice.

I've developed app for iPhone before. I'll only bend it as far as I can back up my claim.

Also, how do you guys deal with all the screen size and ecosystem fragmentation? iOS was starting to piss me off with all the different screen size. I quit right around the time when iphone 6 came out.

I'm thinking of getting a galaxy s6. Should I avoid that and get the Nexus 6p instead? Kinda tight on money here.

What are the job demands like right now? Have pajeets flooded the market like everywhere else?

Hey, is there any point in using C with the NDK or should I just learn Java?

I hate creating bloated software, but fuck it, I'm only doing this for the money anyways.
>>

I'm using a thinkpad x61 right now. Do you think this will be enough power to run the emulator?

Sounds good
>Also, how do you guys deal with all the screen size and ecosystem fragmentation? iOS was starting to piss me off with all the different screen size. I quit right around the time when iphone 6 came out.
I was only briefly in the app industry (symbian lol) for mobile devices before iPhone and Android but it was enough to have me fuck off to heavy industry, automotive, rolling stock and defence sector. Now I just make the occasional android app for myself.
>I'm thinking of getting a galaxy s6. Should I avoid that and get the Nexus 6p instead? Kinda tight on money here.
Just emulate Android. Should be enough for starters.
>What are the job demands like right now? Have pajeets flooded the market like everywhere else?
I'm part owner of a consultant firm and I have to say that the web and app segment in general are flooded with all kinds of people. But it pays the best and there is a lot of movement of people. In the segment I'm specialised in all the big companies pressed the prices down a lot and people often settle for decades in their positions.

It's just the times we live in. I think the market is flooded with people looking for jobs right now so employers don't want to train anyone and have ridiculous demand.

I wish I could get those jobs but nobody is hiring unless you have a ton of experience or label yourself specifically as Android dev or ruby dev.
>>
>>57937529
Well not an mobile development expert as said earlier. I'd say fuck it even though Java is pigdisgusting. I'm quite certain that's what your future employer will use. Take shortcuts.

>>57937617
Probably. If the CPU got virtual machine extensions you are probably fine.

Yeah it's a bitch. We recruit mostly based on recommendation and headhunting. Social skills is worth more than expert knowledge in our line of business. We don't even do coding tests. I recommend creating a linkedin if you haven't. Lot's of useless headhunting companies take the easy shortcut by just grabbing a few profiles from linkedin.

Depends on your location I guess. A lot of larger companies are willing to hire junior positions with little experience. Smaller places not so much unless you are some kind of wizard.

Learn React native, that's what most Android/iOS devs are doing these days then you do cross platform apps. You can also try out lambdanative which is where you write apps once in scheme and export to windows/android/iOS/anything. If you've read SICP you can easily write Android apps with lambdanative.

For jobs look at toptal, they hire android devs or weworkremotely or hnhiring.me which has a monthly hiring thread from HN

Use the Android SDK on your PC for development purposes, and the lg v10 or v20 is considered a good choice for productivity and whatnot as well. I have no hands on experience with the v20 but the v10 was great and I've heard that the v20 has many improvements.

if you are a codemonkey that can't think ideas for himself, i bet you will have a very nice coding job all your life.

anyway, make an app, just like 4chan, but with user accounts, upvotes, downvotes, shadow banning, where users can post links to interesting news articles, funny pictures, etc. to different sections/categories, but also they can create their own categories to invite people with similar interests.

then in the main page, according to the vote of the users, the most popular post are ranked to grab the attention of the rest.

There are plenty of internships and Jr dev positions available, they just don't pay a lot to start. Look at hnhiring.me and regex for 'INTERNS' or "JR'

You can also be an intern on toptal, just reduce your wage to something like $20/hr and say you are new but have a portfolio to show people. If you're a React developer you will get work. More information here: https://news.ycombinator.com/threads?id=NullifyZero

Anybody can learn codify challenges, you either directly do the practice ones on codify or read this book: https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/introduction-algorithms
