What would be a good, stripped down (or maybe lightweight is the right word) distro that I could install and customize myself from the bottom up? I like Arch's process of installing everything manually, but I do not feel competent enough in it's package manager, nor do I feel the need to use another package manager besides apt.
Any suggestions?

Puppy Linux. If you wanna go full neckbeard check out lfs or core

I was thinking more of a stable desktop distro. Puppy linux doesn't really seem like it, and like I said, I don't feel competent enough in linux to fuck around with LFS or Core. Sorry if that wasn't clear enough.
Debian is pretty stripped down
Debian minimal?

I tried it in the past, and nothing worked. Simple installations via the package manager would fail, and configs would just get erased everytime I restarted, so I decided to abandon it for the time being. (not due to wrong mirrorlist)

then do it again and don't fuck it up this time
if you want to limit yourself to apt there's literally nothing more bare bones than debian, everything else downstream just adds complexity
Dude stfu and install gentoo
Manjaro, duh. All the perks of arch while being easier than ubuntu

my slackware full install takes <200mb ram with x, if you go minimal install it will be good i think
