What's the most Linux friendly laptop manufacturer?
I'm sick of them dumbing features out of the BIOS so normalfags don't get confused. This makes it impossible or really difficult to boot from a USB or DVD
Get a Thinkpad T420
Dell 100 pct
only two acceptable laptops are dell latitude or lenovo thinkpad besides macbooks, and macbooks are for macOS

As far as I know, HP's bios has legacy booting support, disablable secure booting, and USB booting on top of other methods. Even Virtualization if you're into that sort of thing.
>>57907728
Anything that's ARM or x86 that has a BIOS which allows booting operating systems other than Windows, which is like 90% of laptops. Linux will run great on everything from the shittiest little toaster to a super computer. If you're having trouble with booting GNU/Linux on your PC, try disabling Secure Boot and enabling legacy/compatibility mode if you're using UEFI. If that doesn't work, do better research before buying and don't waste money on locked down trash.
Linux is very well supported in nearly every Lenovo laptop.

Do they still put malware into the BIOS?

>linux is a legacy OS
sounds about right

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

2 questions:
1) Isn't the compatibility dependent on who makes the parts (samsung, nvidia, intel) not dell and HP?
2) Is ssd TRIM still not enabled by default on most linux distros?
>>57908166
>>57908098
Or any clevo really. Doesn't have to be from System76
>>57908165
They fucked up their BIOS for linux recently, that's a bit disqualifying
>>57908211
I was referring to the BIOS, so it's on companies like HP and Acer
The thread was inspired by an Acer Aspire ES 15 I bought today.
The BIOS is completely crippled. There are no options for virtualization or legacy boot. It can't even boot from a UEFI only bootable USB drive

System76

use h-node.net to find articular models that work nicely

You don't know what you're talking about.

Most hardware works fine on linux from any major hardware manufacturer.
If your distro of choice isn't retarded (see ArchLinux) then SSD TRIM will be enabled by default.

Yep fuck lenovo.

This is hardly them fucking their bios up. I'm not even the person you replied to. This is them using a different AHCI implementation. It could boot linux- if linux had drivers for running that AHCI method.
This is hardly Lenovos fault. I say this as a full time linux daily driver. Learn what you're fucking reading retard.

What a good thread that was. Thanks for the reminder

Sager spinoffs like System76, or Dell's developer series of XPS/Latitude/Precision
>>57909155
the chip must be broadcom
clean the fan, clange the cpu governor, install TLP

the only hp worth buying (is?) was their workstation class i.e. most $$$ shit which you could buy refurbished for a reasonable price
compaq from 2003 can boot from usb sticks
>>57907728
Lenovo, if for no other reason than Red Hat buys shitloads of Thinkpads for their staff, and so they go to special effort to make sure Linux runs well on those machines.
>>57907728
Just installed Ubuntu on an MBP 2015 today, dual booting with refind. Was simple enough to install refind on OSX so you can boot from USB/disc, but I'd probably prefer a machine with a real bios next time.
Everything worked out of the box with Ubuntu though, very pleased with that.

Don't be salty because it's replacing your shitty, duct taped together trash pile of a 90s OS. We'll make you a compatibility layer.
