Where does precision come from?

I mean, consider a milling machine. Everything on it operates along very precise parameters. Where does that precision come from?

How do you go from being able to smelt ore and cast steel to being able to produce precise technology?

(You only said the question had to be simple, not the answer)

Bought a Western Digital, (Black,) WD2003FZEX hard drive and it's alarmingly loud when reading/writing, (which happens almost constantly with the programs I use.)
It doesn't make any clicking or ticking sounds or anything, but it makes a very loud "grinding" sound when reading/writing. Is this normal?

I don't know much about HDDs but they scare the shit out of me because I have lots of important stuff that I don't want to lose, so I'm always backing up my shit and getting paranoid about my hard drive's health.
The noise is definitely worrying, but if it's normal for certain hard drives to be loud while reading/writing, then I won't worry about it. Unless of course the frequency with which my computer does so is a different problem entirely.

So a part of a java program that I'm doing is doing the square footage of a wall

so far I have:

System.out.print("enter length");
double length = in.nextDouble();
System.out.print("enter width");
double width = in.nextDouble();

double wallCalculation = length * width;

how would I do this so that the user can choose how many walls he wants to calculate?

so if the user types in '10', it loops 10 times and shows the total square footage for all 10 walls together.

I tried using a do while loop, but I can't seem to get it right. I can't figure out how to add up each calculation from each pass and store it into one variable.

please help guys I really need it ;_;

In theory? Huge difference in read and write speeds. In practise? They're pretty much identical in loading OS and suspend programs. If you do large write or read operations (f.ex. 4k video editing) then PCIe/m.2 will speed it up considerably but otherwise only get one if you have nothing else to spend money on.

A few nights ago I asked for suggestions for a program to help me rip/download a whole set of fourms that is going offline soon, and I was suggested HTTrack.

So, I adjuisted the settings to the best of my understanding and had that running overnight, and it's still going 14 hours later now with 5gb downloaded and still going

Looking at what it downloaded, it looks like it mostly worked, with a few issues:

1. It downloaded a bunch of junk files and resources I don't need that's inflating the file size
2. For any thread or fourm section where there are multiple pages, I can't click the buttons to get to page 2, 3, etc from the downloaded index.hmtl file

Can anybody tell me what the settings need to be for those to be fixed? The fourm in question is http://monsterarchives.proboards.com/

>>
>>57910629
If you want a compact/point-n-shoot type camera, save your money and just use your phone. The reason that market segment has died off is because they don't really do anything better than phones. They use the same tiny sensors and lenses, etc.

If you have at least $300 to spend and are willing to accept a larger camera in exchange for better photos, then you want a proper interchangeable-lens camera. Go to /p/ and lurk in the gear thread for a while.

Buy a solid air cooler. Air coolers don't have teeny tiny little pumps made by the lowest bidder.

Please forgive my retardation and verbosity:

I play video games with a dual-core cpu that has hyperthreading. Task manager shows it as having four logical processors--cpu 0, 1, 2, and 3. When I tick all four in set affinity, I get lower than expected performance and it seems like my cpu isn't working as hard as it should. When I simply untick cpu 0 and play with only cpu 1, 2, and 3 enabled, I get a pretty big performance boost as it seems all three cores are being fully utilized.

Is cpu 0 acting as a kind of bottleneck for the other three? Would it be possible to get full use of all four of these cores instead of limiting myself to just three? Thanks in advance, lads.

I have 32GB DDR3 which is built for 2400MHz @ 1.65V, but my processor defaults it to 1.5V @ 1333MHz.

Apparently if I overvolt the RAM (1.65V) to up the clockspeed (to 2400MHz), my CAS timings will go up (from 9-9-9-24 to 11-13-13-31).

I'm not sure what matters more in terms of performance. Is it worth it to overclock/overvolt my RAM if it causes my CAS timings to rise?

As far as I can understand, the generics are as they sound. Generic to make it work. I'd say if your device has it's own, do so to make it work more efficiently.
If you use this GPU to play video games, then you really want to do so.
>>
>>57912054
Thanks.
One more thing, each GPU have it's own driver right?
There isn't a driver that will work on all the GPU made by Nvidia for example.

My friend says he have a DVD that includes the latest Nvidia drivers for GPU, I told him this most be the software that controls it not the drivers itself.
Am I right?
>>
Is there a certain filesystem or something that can stop hangups from happening as often or is better hardware the only answer?
>>
>>57912103
>each GPU have it's own driver
Not really. All GeForce cards use the same GeForce driver, assuming the device is still supported. Their business cards, which I think is called Quarto or something like that, all use the same driver for that line of cards. They make different drivers based on the line of gpus, but all those within the line use the same driver still.

I don't really understand your last question. Are you asking if the DVD has software like GeForce Experience?
All in all you can get all update to date drivers online, and that DVD most likely doesn't have it. They do sometimes give other software they deem helps, but it's not usually necessary to work.
However I think the force you to install their stupid GeForce Experience.

>>57912221
>Are you asking if the DVD has software like GeForce Experience?
No, I should have mentioned I'm not talking about recent hardware.
Something old like GeForce 2 MX.
My friend doesn't believe in downloading the drivers manually.
So he either uses Driver solution pack, or some DVDs that contains collection of drivers.
So regarding Nvidia GeForce drivers, drivers for GTX and MX is the same? the only difference is the software that comes with it?

Oh. That's pretty old, fami. You could probably get away with using the generics for that, but it might be best to see if you can't find the latest drivers for that online anyways.
Though the GTX series won't share any drivers with those because that's pretty old and doesn't even have support. I thought you were talking about currently supported cards. It sounds contrary to what I said last post but that's because I was being lazy and not getting too specific.

What is the reason for using such old hardware?

I find this site to be more comprehensive/accurate for CPU/GPU benches.

Its roughly a 40% increase in power.

Its a much more demanding/modern game.

I have both DS2/DS3 on my computer and I can tell you, the graphics on DS3 at low everything is still miles better than DS2 at its best.

DS2 graphics aged terribly to my eye.

The 480 is undoubtedly more powerful than the 770, but his cpu would hold it back to the point where it wouldn't matter. Trust me, been there dun that; my first PC had a shitty core 2 quad (can't recall the model) and a GT210, which I upgraded to a GTX 570. The 570 was a beast at the time, but my CPU was holding it back so much I was getting 40fps on Saints Row 3 no matter if I was running minimum or max settings.

Tl;dr upgrade your CPU first, a 6300 just doesn't cut it for modern titles.

I know that Z170 boards will support Kaby Lake but will Z270 boards support skylake?

Oh I didn't know what M2s were. Doing my first build very soon and I've been waiting to snag up an SSD. However it looks like my motherboard doesn't have a specified M2 port where you screw the thing in, only 2 extra PC-I ports. Would it be a retarded of me to just stick it in one of those and have it standing there vertically? I want to use this as my boot drive. Mobo is H110M Pro-VD
>>
>>57914616
Most likely, they're both 1151 socket and there have been "leak" beachmarks testing skylake/kabylake on those new mobos.

Still, you gotta verify with product specifications, just in case.

no, you need an m2 port.

Pic related shows a conflict caused by connecting unrestricted multiple inputs to a shared medium.

Now, Logisim's documentation says that red colored wires means that the circuit has an 'error' value. But what does that mean in this specific case? A short-circuit? The circuit takes a certain garbage value? What happens?

How does a wifi extender work? Is it worth it?
>>
Long user of Win 7 on a laptop here.

Bought a desktop, should I go straight to Win 10? Or stick with Win 7? Or hell, even 8/8.1?
>>
>>57915361
WiFi range extenders are suboptimal because they reduce the available bandwidth.

It receives a WiFi signal and retransmits it. The channel is blocked during the retransmit, reducing the available overall bandwidth.

Two solutions:
a) Lay cable to each WiFi AP
b) Get a dual-band router with OpenWRT firmware. Set it as a client on 2.4 GHz and as an access point on 5 GHz (or similar combinations).

If you don't care that much about bandwidth, repeaters are okay though.
I have one in the basement to connect an embedded device that rarely transmits anything it all.

I was wanting to root it but now I'm not sure if I can. I tried earlier today and got the bootloader unlocked, but when I tried installing TWRP recovery my phone bricked and was stuck in bootloop. Now thats fixed, and my phone is on a fresh install of 7.0.

Do I need to downgrade back to 6.1 to be able to root, or do I need to wait for people to make a new way to root 7.0? I'm really quite retarded when it comes to this stuff so I don't know what I'm doing ss

/v/&/vg/ here.

I recently tried to play a game, however, as soon as i got into it my CPU and GPU temps hit 70+.

I made the mistake of not having Speccy viewable and before i noticed what the game was doing, my temps were already at 95c for GPU and 73c for CPU.

My questions are
1: Whats dangerous temps for CPU and GPU? Dangerous as in its starting to damage the parts? What should be my normal temps and whats "shut it down" temps?

2: Should a program ever drive your PC to that levels? Is it just poor optimisation? Every other fairly new game i play gets it to around 70 for GPU but never anything too hot for CPU, the last "game" that did was a Unity game with no FPS limit so it ended up running at 500 frames and my PC's frames got real loud.

3: Is it bad cooling on my part (Stock CPU Fan with one fan at the front panel and one at the back but all fans/vents arent obstructed and have decent air flow)

Does an empty excel cell have a value? I mean, like "NULL" or something.
>>
>>57916314
Considering your average spreadsheet software lets you scroll very far both horizontally and vertically, the most probable answer would be "no", because it would be inefficient to zero-fill the entire matrix. A sparse matrix that only holds information about non-empty cells seems more likely.

Your HDD is prehistoric. Get SSD. It will give you much better boost in terms of performance than upgrading RAM.

>>
>>57915080
That is one hell of a old HDD anon.

You start seeing problems at 30k hours and you are in the 50k hours.
Get a 240GB SSD (850 EVO).

It will be bottlenecked a bit because your motherboard uses SATA2 instead SATA3 but it will work.
>>
>>57916817
>>57915080
Also upgrading RAM is good too, add another 4GB stick.

A new GPU would be good too.
>>
>>57916817
>850 EVO
Or he can get even cheaper Crucial MX300. Yes I know it's a bit slower, but since he's upgrading from 15 years old HDD and is still limited by SATA2 he won't notice the difference.

Hell even I have 2 high end computer, one with evo and other with mx300 and the only noticeable difference between them is in benchmarks.
>>
>>57916845
I was going for reliability over perfomance but yeah, anything will be good for him since he is limited by SATA2.
>>
>>57916813
So they can with the click of a button get root access to my system, install virus.deb, wipe logs, and that's that?

Why would anyone get or trust a VPS provider?
>>
>>57916856
MX300 has 3 years warranty so I wouldn't worry about it.
For the past 5 years I have been buying Crucial almost exclusively not only for myself but also for people I fix computers for. Over these 5 years I had only 1 failure, and it was after 2.5 years of use. Crucial honoured the warranty and replaced it with higher model.
>>
>>57915795
1. Normal idle temps should be around the temperature of your room, and slightly higher. Think somewhere near 30 (fine) and 40 (okay-ish) degrees. "Shut it down" temps are any temps near 80 or 90 degrees. Those are simply unhealthy.

2. Without cooling at all, even an idle PC can hit those temps. Any program can make your PC run at 90 degrees if the cooling is awful.

3. Yes, it most likely is. Disassemble your shit, clean it with alcohol and redo your thermal paste. Google how you should do this.

TL;DR: Your cooling is awful and you need to fix it. This is not the fault of the developers.
>>
>>57916864
because companies want customers.

>>57916874
So far 2 failures here, both BX200, but better than the 57 SV300 failures my clients have had, for whatever reason that SSD is really popular over here.

I have yet to have a client bring me a damaged 850 EVO or an ADATA SP550.
Zotac is really reliable too apparently but i haven't sold enough to talk about it.
>>
>>57916941
SATA2 = SATA 3Gb/s which is around 300MB/s speed limit.
SATA3 = SATA6Gb/s which is +-550MB/s.

And a WD 1TB? yeah it will be good enough but most people buy SSDs this days.
