SD has a weakness in terms of software failure (can fuck it up) and electrical failure (can wipe it out), but doesn't have a weakness in terms of physical failure since it has no mechanical parts.
HDD has a weakness in terms of mechanical failure (vibrations and parts breaking), but doesn't have a weakness in terms of software (firmware) and electrical failure (the head will stop moving and everything on the platter can be retrieved after it is taken out and placed into a specialized device).

Both complement each other, and both are required individually to keep one's data completely secured.

Anyway just recently replaced two WD Caviar SE16 from 2008. Powered on so long the counter reset. No bad sectors, no noise. They were only archive drives though. I'm sure they would have lasted a few more years, but drives are cheap.
