If you ping your own IP (actual IP, not 127.0.0.1) does the packet leave the NIC, go out onto the network and get picked up again by the NIC?
Or does the computer recognise as your own and send it straight up the TCP/IP stack?
Unplug your network cable and try it.

Depends on the OS. I know the Linux kernel doesn't send it to the NIC
