is dial up free now?

it's probably not usable since a lot of websites take more bandwidth to load now

What do you think is the modem port on that one?

The rare fax.
Guy out in the field in Shitsville where the only internet connection is dialup.
Some industry specific hardware component of the workflow is old, but still works and hasn't been replaced.

It still gets some use, but few & far between and almost unneeded by the general populace. Maybe Apple was on to something when they dropped it a decade ago.

>>

I know stuff gets old and replaced by newer standards. but some are just so handy... if they keep making official adapters, maybe business laptops are fine still with them. Consumer versions dont matter, they can switch to newer tech and drop old ones just to keep the cost down.

Businesslaptops beter come with options to include older hardware. They happely pay for them if needed.

Diskettes did suck, and 1.33Mb is not much. back in 1996 I was real happy with CD-burners. but kids these days.... im feeling old
>>

>i2c over vga
Holy shit, that's the first thing I learned from /g/. This is some good shit.
>>
>>57866624
That was a quick list I made in about 10 seconds. I also like how you ignored mailing groups.

e-mail servers respond instantly with a failure. that "oh I didn't get it so I can't do my job!" line might work if you're working with someone at a different company... internally, nobody buys this anymore. There are also forced send receipts for exceptionally unworthy recipients.

The real problem with faxes is the fact that you have to have the paper both before and after. It can get lost, destroyed, etc. also after a few days you are going to have cabinets of paper with no record on who sent what.

If you're a privacy sperg, you don't have to use g-mail, if this is the problem you're having, you can pay for a different host.

Even if you think there's a need for a document, you can just scan it and e-mail. there's no need for faxing anymore and really no need for printers because you can electronically sign. Problem is no organization run by boomers is going to accept this kind of thing and pretend to cite some "government rule" - yet how could these e-signature services exist if it wasn't accepted?
>>
>>57866715
>If you're a privacy sperg, you don't have to use g-mail, if this is the problem you're having, you can pay for a different host.

All e-mail is unencrypted and can be read by anyone on the network.

this will only end poorly for everyone as you become the next generation of boomers whining about typewriters, yet if they ever meet another boomer, suddenly it's "remember how bad typewriters sucked"

There's really just no use case for them anymore. Finding some society which is 20 years behind the curve doesn't count. outside the data limit, they were unreliable, and would die after just a couple of years. there was no real long term way to store them. also probably required extra packing to be shipped since they count as "fragile"

the new typewriter conversation goes like this
>Hey kid you don't know what we had back in the day, floppies, they were so much better than what we have today
>>Well they really weren't because -
>Fuck off kid, you don't know shit

later on some other person your age walks in
>Hey dude remember floppies?
>I remember how much they sucked
>yup fuck that shit, wasted most of my time just trying to use them

kid walks back in
>Hey here's the kid who doesn't know about floppies!

This behavior is toxic and only results in everyone being worse off. You MUST go and find your floppy collection in your attic and burn it. BTW, remember to take the floppy collection outside before you burn it.
>>
>>57866746

Hello newfriend!
>>
>>57864827
Look at the shape of the port. It is built to be able to accept 8p8c & rj-11.
>>
>>57866807
Your right for the most if not all parts.
Floppies and diskettes are bad, and most people should toss em out. either backup that rare sourcecode or consider it lost.

VGA isnt that dead yet (sadly) because there are plenty of shitholes in western countries or china still with VGA input only.

We need faster wifi, to beat in office network speeds for workhorse laptops. Hipsters and gamers dont realy need it. it will come in time.

Dont care bout kids not knowing what some old tech is, its better to get new tech work and generaly accepted. but the usb-c only on the new mac isnt for business, its for private use.

>>57866553
>only because the places where those rules are made are run by boomers. we have e-signing services now.
Just like snail mail, the reason why fax is still important, despite the existence of other faster methods, is redundancy. When we are sending something important, we email, fax, and first class mail the recipient so in case one doesn't come through, the other two would hopefully find their way. This also minimizes the chances that the recipient would say "lol what document."
tl;dr it's for protection
>>
>>57864902

The two middle pins of the ethernet port are ring and tip.
>>
>>57870006

Just being devils advocate for a minute. Email is extremely easy to fake, faxes are tied to a land line so you can match that phone number to the person who is sending it and have some kind of "proof of authenticity"
>>
>>57864833
Honestly, if dial up were free, that would be the best VPN ever if you're going to do anything that requires maximum privacy. But then again, cell phone connections are a thing.

Just think, using dial up exclusively to get on IRC.

after the other machine prints your message, you get a fax confirmation output showing among other things the sender's number, the recipient's number, the timestamp, the number of pages sent and received, and the top half of the first page you have sent. This.

A "dongle" can be any small device that hangs off a port, whether it be a cable adapter, wireless, or whatever. Copy protection dongles are still a thing, too, they're just USB now.

I built a PC for a recording studio a while back and several of the programs and plugins it used were dongle-protected. A lot of professional software and hardware still uses dongles, for example most factory automotive diagnostic computers require them. They're also used for stuff other than copy protection, like on some CNC machines, where they're used as a key to keep unauthorized personnel from tampering with things.

That's an Ethernet port. Phone ports (used for dial-up) look a little different.

Some modern laptops still use Ethernet for networks where Wi-Fi is not available, or for use with operating systems that have non-functioning Wi-Fi drivers (whereby one may have to download drivers from the Internet, because they are non-free and the group who made the distro figured you'd not want them included by default).
>>
>>57864801
Former foreclosure tax & title guy here, government offices love faxes like they love cocks. Especially in Illinois and Indiana. You have to fax them something to get a correspondence sheet via fax, which you fill out and fax back, then they fax back the info you need.
