hi /g/
anyone here every try to reball a BGA chip? i'm going to be attempting it soon with my x220. no one thinks i can solder an ivy bridge CPU into my laptop AND have it function correctly over a 10W TDP limit, FOUR cores, and EIGHT fucking threads.
also, SMD/soldering/rework thread i guess
louis if you see this go to sleep

What's the point in upgrading the cpu of a 4+ year old machine?

prove me wrong fegget
Tried reballing CPU/GPU on xbox360 slim. It still works after 5 months, but although it worked in my case, it might not work if your problem is between chip/bga substrate (as is the case in many nvidias)..
>>57864236
I've thought about it but never tried.
keep us updated

It's an interesting project. I'm too lazy to google the limitations of a x220.
Does the mobo even support the CPU you're proposing to upgrade to?
When you say "over a 10W TDP limit" Do you mean the CPU you're going to install requires 10W more than your laptop provides? Under clocking and undervolting would likely resolve this.
Keep us updated.

Your chipset won't support it even if you do solder it correctly.

yes, i've done quite a bit of research. my only issue is finding the damn processor. they are listed on alibaba for ~$300, but there is no way in fuck i am paying that much for a mobile i7 from 5 years ago. i'm hoping to snag one on ebay somewhere, or even just pull one out of some trash laptop.
the socket itself is BGA1023, which was released in early Jan 2011 i believe, along with a PPGA988 socket.
the current i5 i have sitting in my x220 can go both ways, PPGA988 and FCBGA1023. it is a 2540m, two cores, four threads, 35w TDP.
the i7 i want to use is an i7 3612QE, four cores, eight threads, 35w TDP. HOWEVER, i can't find one anywhere, so I may need to opt for a 3615QE, but that maxes my TDP limit by 10w. afaik, as long as i dont max my peripherals, i should be able to get away with that CPU without having to undervolt/clock much, if at all.
to make things even better, for boards utilizing the QM67 chipset, which in my case, is one of them, ivy/sandy bridge vBIOS functions similar because of that SB.
so my only hoops are honestly finding a damn chip, and making sure i don't fry it while trying to reball. on top of that, i can't seem to find a stencil for either CPU, but i may need to reball with a microscope, solder beads, and a pair of tweezers.
as for keeping you guys posted, i plan on making a youtube video about this process, in the event that it is actually successful, i'll post a link here, or you can just find it. in the event that it isn't, i'll probably still upload it, just for the fuck of it.
>>57864289
So it performs better.
>>57864662
for the vBIOS part, what i'm trying to say is, even though my QM67 chipset is a sandy bridge chipset, it actually supports the 3612QE, and i think the 3615QE also.

http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-Intel_(chipsets)/QM67_Express.html
it does.
along with the: i7-3517UE, i7-3555LE, and i7-3610QE.
so with the 3612QE, i'll be gaining a 22nm process, HD 4000 graphics, two extra cores, and four extra threads.
i was also considering yanking the heatsink out of an x230 considering the whole thing itself is made entirely out copper, switching to a super nice thermal compound, and using that for my cooling solution.
if i can snag a 3612QE anywhere, this is almost full-proof, minus the BGA rework for reasons listed above.
i can keep my nice ass keyboard, upgrade my shitty panel to a 1080p IPS panel with another mod THAT DOESNT HAVE FUCKING GHOSTING ISSUES, and use this little bastard as a nice portable workstation for when i'm not at home dicking around.
i already have a 9-cell battery in this thing, if i can secure a decent battery slice, it will make the whole thing even better.

Forget it.
I have an Elitebook which is basically the same class as an X220, but unlike that thinkpad shit, the CPU can be swapped easily, even to quadcores. I can guarantee you that you won't be able to run a +10W CPU without throttling/heat/noise problems unless you are really extremely lucky with the CPU you get.
Even switching from an i5-2540 to an i7-2640, you will notice a big difference, even though it's the same TDP. If you even go to a 45W CPU... the cooling is really not made for these kind of CPUs. You should have at least 14" with a proper cooling.

Well, if you are stupid enough to do this you should at least take a look at this: https://www.techinferno.com/index.php?/forums/topic/1982-125-hp-elitebook-2570p-owners-lounge/&page=15#comment-68659

thanks for the info

No thanks, chum ! I dont visit sites that want to rip me off

damm, intresting... but I highly doubt it will work. for what gain? btw, IntelME isnt turned on yet right? or coreboot anyway?
>>57866101
Same idea here. but dont see that screen thx to javascript blockers?
>>57864236
This is retarded, laptops are disposable consumer products and are not meant to upgrade. Your chinkpad wasn't designed to cool a more powerful chip and likely barely cools the one it came with when at 100% load.
>>57866560
shut up and go be boring elsewhere phaggot

>no one thinks i can solder an ivy bridge CPU into my laptop AND have it function correctly over a 10W TDP limit, FOUR cores, and EIGHT fucking threads.
is the socket the same? if so, godspeed anon, and let us know how it goes
>>57867733
yeah man, socket, chipset, vbios, tdp (on the i7-3610QE that is) all match up with this board
only issues are hunting down the cpu itself, seeing if i can find a stencil for the rework, and of course, reballing the cpu itself
even if heat turns out to be an issue, i just want to know if this will work.
It won't boot, the bios microcode doesn't support it. Some work was done on the T420 with coreboot to support ivy bridge quads but I don't know how far they got with it.
You'd have to look into it and port that to X220 first before even considering soldering on the chip.

For all you reballfags I have some basic common sense questions for you, ready?
1. Soder melts at typically much higher temperatures than a processor can achieve. How is it that the soder melted or otherwise cracked before the chip fried?
2. Let's say your oven gets hot enough to reball. How do you know you didn't damage your gpu in the long run?
3. Where do you suppose those pins end up connecting inside the actual die/substrate? Do you see wires inside the chip? Do they exist?
Anyways enjoy your additional 2 months at best I voided the warranty hack.

you can stick lipstick on a pig, but its still a pig.
Is this what poor people do in their free time? What's the point?
>>57864236
Just give it to a specialist
He should do this and it should work

>no one thinks i can solder an ivy bridge CPU into my laptop AND
Do the bga stockets even have the same number of holes or dimensions?!!?!?!?!?

are you trolling? look up BGA reballing or any series of SMD rework videos
