Generally you either use RAID realized fully in software, _OR_ you buy actual professional-grade RAID HBAs. NEVER use any RAID controllers which are built into the chipset of a motherboard (in Linux such stuff is usually called "fake RAID" to distinguish it from both actual (i.e. full hardware) RAID, and "software RAID".
