Are Creative Soundcards any good these days?

I don't want to do some gaming shit, just want nice sound. And no, I can't afford to pay a shitload of money for these expensive usb-dacs.

I had a Xonar D1 before and although I really liked the sound quality with that card, the card was pure shit for its issues. One was that sometimes very suddenly there would be a superloud static noise that kills your ears when you have your headphones on. That was always a nice surprise. According to reviews I read this was a common issue and ASUS shitcards have a whole lot of other issues as well. Never again.

I bought a G5 only to find out it has no open source drivers

just kill me now desu
>>
Anyone?

Yes, just don't expect any real loonix support. The quality of the make and components is good. Support is decent; just don't expect Creative to support your five year old card on the latest Microsoft release.

If you are looking for real production gear, you're better off looking at real professional solutions.
>>
currently using this on windows 7, seems to work ok

>>57842763
Apparently only for old creative cards
>>
>Still using Sound Cards

Haven't decent - high tier mobo sound solutions essentially made them obsolete?

Like the only people who still need one only do so for highly specialist applications / ultra-high end audiophiles looking for exceptional DACs
>>
I currently have 15ms latency using an instrument through onboard audio.

The three contributor of that latency are
Input lat
Processing lat
Output lat

Would using a sound card reduce any of these?
>>
>>57843163
I have an ASUS z87 Pro and sadly it doesn't.

I hear a difference between this and my former Xonar D1.
>>
>>57843163
>Haven't decent
No, low and mid tier and still noisy as shit. No idea why board designers haven't figured it out by now.
>- high tier mobo
Yes, high end mobos have delivered clean sound for a long time.

If audio is a goodnuff thing for you, no you don't need a sound card, but if that is the case, what are you doing here?

sound cards are if you need more input/output than what your motherboard delivers

if you have problems with the quality if your sound, get an EXTERNAL dac, because continuing to have your sound running off your computer's power supply is likely the primary source of your dissatisfaction with the sound

minimize the usage of drivers

>only gaymers use soundcards
ohai, anon.
>>
>>57842513
They are 100% pointless. Just run digital output like everyone else, and as always how good the sound is will be determined by your amp. They really only matter for hipster fags using old as shit equipment without digital inputs.
>>
>>57842513
z series is pretty good. zxr is pretty hard to beat for dedicated sound cards. z/zx are the same identical cards except the zx comes with a fancy control unit.

i own the zx myself and love it. far better than my old xonar d1 and blows my realtek 1150 on my asus x99 strix
>>
>>57845516
You're a fucking idiot.
>>57842513
Worthless.
>>
>>57842513
They're one of the few cards that are cheap and still have stereo mix. It's insanely useful for audio visualizers and effects.
>>
>>57842513
Don't bother with onboards. Just get a usb/firewire/thunderbolt soundcards that are standard for production. Even a native instruments DJ soundcard will do you better than this. They can go for a good price with multiple outputs and great driver support ez
>>
>>57842513
I've been using the Z with headphones for a few years — it's :DDDDDDDD breddy gud! No Linux drivers though.

THIS FUCKING HORSE SHIT RIGHT HERE!

>Have this FUCKING ISSUE.
>Asus is chinkniggers who won't fix goddamn drivers.
>Buy Creative Soundblaster ZX
>Don't have a single goddamn issue.

BUY THE CREATIVE, SELL THE ASUS

FUCK ASUS!
>>
SB Z series are all shit, get yourself "Audigy RX". You cant go wrong with E-mu chipset and CMSS 3D.
>>
Are there any decent cards that Linux will enjoy?
>>
>>57843661
le spooky /v/ boogeyman
>>
>>57842513
just get a receiver/amp with a decent dac and use hdmi or optical
>>
>>57845516
I second this guy>>57845673
you are a fucking idiot

Sound cards are largely worthless today. That said Asus cards work great on Linux. Don't even bother with Creative if Linux is your thing.

>>57847409
Yes buy the same arse hole soundcard they were peddling 14+ years ago (audigy 2) but now as PCIE instead of PCI.

Fucking moron.
>>
>>57846722
I have a gigabyte board for this reason

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5518#ov

Supposedly good quality built in
>>
>>57843183

I use a shitty, 10+ year old Creative SoundBlaster. It has ASIO drivers. I can set the latency/buffer down to 2ms and it works like a charm for my guitar.
I assume newer ones are even more "stable".
>>
>>57847617
Audigy were good cards, though.
Even the old cheap SoundBlasters were good, I still have one.
