Is it just a meme or is windows 10's built-in security shit actually good and combining it with mbam and ubo makes a separate AV unnecessary?
>>
>>57839194
No, it detects more false positive than actual viruses

Any free av such as Avast or AVG and such are far better, still not brilliant, but better.

I'm using ubuntu on an old laptop with a broken headphone input, so I've got a usb audio adapter for my headphones. Sound was working fine up until today and out of the blue, the volume is way too high with them on, and suddenly goes mute when lowered below about 50% volume (before there was noise on 10%, and it was about loud enough as it needed to get on 20%).

I tried this.

https://chrisjean.com/fix-for-usb-audio-is-too-loud-and-mutes-at-low-volume-in-ubuntu/

But it hasn't worked. How do I fix this?

Don't know if this is the right board.

Guy I know is participating in this contest, voting is done online.
Votes are linked to IP.
Was thinking about giving him some help.
Tor works, but he will probably get disqualified if they see all the ip's are coming from all over the world.

Is there any way to get some unique ip's that are all in one (my own) country. Maybe a national botnet or national anonymity network.

Installing win8.1 on a pc
on a fresh install, i check for updates, and it never goes through. either fails or checks forever.

I was told before this is because there is some first manual update you must run to get winupdate working

I searched for this, but dont know what its called so I end up at a dead end

Anyone know what I need to do to get updates working on a fresh win8.1 install?

The RPI's firmware directly reads from /boot and boots. There's no mechanism to tell it to boot one OS or another like you can have with Grub

I just put a new SSD into my computer in addition to the one I have my OS on, running Windows 10. What I want to do is simply migrate my old drive to the new (larger) one. Problem is, my computer won't recognize the new drive. I could use some help here...
Put together my new build before my gpu arrived, everything worked great, ran memtest for 24 hours with 0 errors.
Gpu came in yesterday, so I put it in, but when I went to turn it on, the fans made about 1 turn then nothing. I can't get it to power on at all now.
Took it all apart this morning and breadboarded it, but no luck. When I connect the psu and turn it on, the power button lights up on my mobo, but nothing happens when I press it. I jumpered the psu and the fan spins in it; nit sure if that means anything, since I have no other way to test it...

What the fuck is going on here??

I just got information I need for my job search (3 days on the neetwagon) in a .xps file. I need to pass it on, but they don't accept this type of file.

As far as I can see its "Microsoft Document Writer" file used for a type of digital prints, and these can be converted to .PDF

How can I convert this into the PDF?

The office programs I have here aren't letting me save it as such and all the programs I have tried plaster their big ass watermark on the converted PDF unless you buy the program. Which I am usually not adverse to doing to but I have no income as of now.

It's not even working with the integrated graphics now.
I did a BIOS update when it was still working, because I'd read about gpu compatability issues with older versions.
The Clear CMOS button is lit up, as well as the two 8-pin power LEDs on the gpu. There's nothing on the little Qcode readout, it's not lit up at all. Resetting the CMOS flickers the LEDs, but doesn't seem to change anything, with or without the gpu installed.

I'm in need of a laptop and I want something with an active pen digitizer, since I like to draw and generally do art.
I currently have an x220 tablet, but with all the issues I've been having with it, I'm thinking about throwing it on ebay if I can find something better.
(issues: screen pressure spots, brittle and creaky plastics, rubber trim pieces falling off, very inaccurate digitizer, meh performance, chugs in applications like photoshop, 2.5-3.5 hours of battery life on power saver mode, etc)

The Elitebook 2760p looks seems to be better built, but has most of the same issues, the Dell XT3 is supposedly a time bomb before the digitizer dies, and the x230t is the same as what I have, just with a better cpu/graphics.
I don't mind buying used if it's in good shape, I just want something that'll work, and if new, I'd want decent warranties or support if in case something goes wrong, which is why I ruled out the Cube i7 stylus, as decent as that seems.
I have stand alone graphics tablets and they're fine, but I don't work as well with them as I do with an active display.

Anyone know of any good laptops or tablets (better than this at least) with an active digitizer for <$300?

I have a personal thing against gaming branded crap, mostly that having gaming in the name just increases price. I've known a few people who got gaming laptops, keyboards, and mice that had a shorter lifetime than they should have. One of my friends had an alienware laptop that had battery issues the week after it was out of warranty. I had a turtle beach headset and I ended up getting 4 pairs of them in the warranty period.
>>
People troubleshooting your no POST issues here: Unplug the power supply then take out the CMOS battery and short the two terminals on the board together to remove any residual charge keeping the CMOS memory alive. Connect a speaker to the speaker pinouts on the motherboard. You need at least one RAM module installed - make sure it's in the proper slot per your motherboard manual and make sure it's absolutely inserted firmly. Boot with no cards installed. Even if there's no onboard video, you should at least get a 'no video' beep code from the speaker.

Canned air doesn't get dust/hair buildup like in that picture out of your system unless you actually disassemble it.
>>
>>57841833
Canned air just blows the dust chunks back into the fan ready to be blown right back into the grill again.

Over time the heat and constant dust building up makes it very thick and carpet like.

My laptop used to over heat and shut down until I removed the dust build up, now it runs fine.

Maybe this is a better place to ask.

I made a thread for my question, but everyone just keeps being mean to me, so i better try here.

ultra-plebian at technology at computers here, but figured this is the most relevant place to ask.

Do you guys think this computer could play Sid Meiers Civilization 6 flawlessly on the highest quality graphic settings, or any steam game for that matter?

And if this one can't, is there any laptop that can for under $450?

>inb4 BRO build your own desktop

That's perfectly normal, anything higher than 80c is a cause for concern although the founders editions cards can run happily @83c because it starts taking measures.

I have a question about charging AGM batteries?

http://www.soundsolutionsaudio.com/forum/topic/53042-charging-xs-power-batteries/?page=1

I'm reading that you should charge them no more than 14.4 volts and you need a special charger

can I just hook up a potentiometer / fuse / diode and push 1amp 14.4 volts to the battery and be safe?

I have done this on older batteries no issues before just want to check I guess the only thing I see is that AGM batteries need no more than 14.4volts

I want to just use a regulated voltage PSU to set 14.4volts and push that shit in there without buying some stupid meme charger..

thanks

Set the current limit for 44/10=4.4 amps max and the supply voltage to 14.4v plus an additional diode drop for the diode you'll put in series with the supply to the battery to stop any back feeding.

At that current a 5 amp or more schottky diode will be best, you can also use a regular silicon diode but it will get pretty hot.

I'll do the diode things I got some extras. I was going to put a 10amp fuse in too cuz the battery will def exceed that if it back feeds

thanks a bunch

>>57843864
Yeah the fuse might be a good idea just in case, the diode is pretty much essential as the battery back feeding could damage your PSU.

A schottky diode will drop about .4v @ its rated current so the PSU output voltage will probably need to be a little higher than that in order for the full 14.4v to appear across the battery terminals.

But bare in mind that as the current draw drops towards the end of charging the voltage dropped across the diode will also fall so keep an eye that, you might need to manually nudge it back down to 14.55v or so to prevent the full 14.8v from over charging it.

When you first apply power the voltage readout on the PSU will suddenly drop to whatever voltage the battery is sitting at plus the diode drop, this is normal and is just the current limit kicking in. In time this will raise back up until the hard current limiting is not longer needed (might take hours if the battery is run down).

Because the alternator puts out such a high amperage that it won't "top off" the battery, so I have to trickle charge it before so I can pull same wattage with less amps if I have a 14volt on my music amp vs a 12volt?

>>
>>57844112
I'm not very well versed in automotive stuff but I assume because the alternator is a big ass inductor the voltage it puts out depends on the load, so if the load is low such as the car idling the output voltage likely rises higher whilst the battery absorbs very little energy from the current being supplied (Peukert's law).

Basically the energy ends up being wasted as heat, but when charged with a bench charger at a lower current the battery will absorb the charge properly.

this is going to be a very stupid question, but does it matter what kind of ram that i get for a laptop? it just needs to be sodimm, right?
>>
>>57844570
i highly recommend you get either a dell latitude or thinkpad

i honestly wish i had known about business line laptops earlier on in life
>>
>>57844622
Appretiate it. Trying to finaly get into the meat of mods/game making and ruin my life with steam. Looking for a place to get started with but every step seems like a greased up rope ladder.

I know in two years whatever i buy will be functionally worthless, but i'll keep lurking for a few days and go for the gusto

How do I make firefox fill in passwords in private tabs?
>>
>>57844605
>buy RAM from ebay

Its a big risk man, usually its made using ram chips that failed qc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrvCex2eo6U

Best stick to the reputable brands and retailers like crucial and corsair.
>>
>>57844531
Depends on the exact model of the PSU but thermaltake or generally ok.
>>
>>57844676
if you're looking for gaming capable machines, get either a w530, a t430 with dedicated graphics, or a t450/t460

i don't know what the dell & hp equivalents are

i sold my $800 gaming laptop and went to a thinkpad, i really mean what i say. it may not matter at first, but a year or two down the road when something goes wrong it will really suck when you can't fix it yourself, those gaming laptops aren't meant to be serviced by the user

business laptops are easy to service

Which distro is actually best?
>>
>>57844716
debian
>>
>>57844716
Gentoo.
>>
>>57844716
Depends on what you want it for. There's no single 'best' distro, just different distros that are designed for certain things in mind. Gentoo for power users who want CLI or Fedora for an easy one that 'just werks'

If I may ask a question in turn, I've recently bought a soundbar and I have the HDMI IN connected to my graphics card HDMI. Yet, it shows up as 'not plugged in' on windows audio control panel, what do?
>>
>>57844709

>>
>>57844716
Mint.
>>
>>57844605
SODIMM is just size and shape of the card. You still need to consider compatibility with your machine. There's DDR2, DDR3, DDR4, different speeds, different voltages, etc.
>>
>had Fx-8320 and some shit gigabyte motherboard

Do you guys think this is the issue? Or maybe something else?
>>
>>57844755
Yes this is the issue. Windows is a shit OS and it will 100% be a cluster fuck each time you switch motherboards unless you reinstall.

I'm trying to figure out how to connect to the my iPhone's hotspot thingy from my laptop.

I'd really like to be able to run a quick script from the command line with some number that's unique to my phone and connect to my phone rather than open up the OS X network utility thing and select "Anon's iPhone".

Is there a way to do that?
>>
>>57844764
even windows 10? I heard that was better for changing hardware
>>
>>57844716

Slackware. I'm not joking. Everything worked right out of the box, even suspend.

Although once I upgraded and needed to change some kernel configuration options to use UTF-8 in console mode, but that wasn't too bad.

I don't think Linux users are really that opinionated. Most of us know Linux well because that's what servers run these days and don't want to learn another OS if it isn't necessary.

I just recently built a computer, and it worked fine for a couple days until I decided to install the GPU drivers. I got some "fatal directx error 11000002" error while playing FF14, Overwatch gives me a "your rendering device has been lost" error while Windows tells me "Application has been blocked from accessing Graphics Hardware"
I have also gotten an engine error "DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED: GetDeviceRemovedReason() = DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_RESET" and a "failed to reset d3d9 device" error too.

I've spent hours trying to figure stuff out, uninstalling and reinstalling drivers and changing settings. I have no idea what to do know, hopefully you guys can help. GPU is Asus GTX 1060 3g oc.
>>
>>57844939
Is the GPU properly inserted into the slot? Are the power cables firmly attached?

I kinda wanna install Linux but still play a lot of games only for linux. Any way to work around this? I've heard of using a flash drive to boot with a different os but seems too unconventional.
Thanks for any advise given!

well, just use the older version of driver you were on before. Have you tried that?

1. https://www.virtualbox.org/
get that
2. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_distributions
google the distro you wanna play with
when you find a download (yes they are free it's linux. Plus most are big like a gb and have torrents to help aid in downloading)
3. run the VM and then throw the ISO in it and do what it says.

Most everything in a Vbox is pretty self explanatory.

Start by getting familiar with the terminal (must-know features are auto-completion with Tab, wget and a basic understanding of GNU Make).
Proceed by ditching PulseAudio and configuring ALSA to work on its own.
Then install your own WM/DE and switch to it.
Then learn how wpa_supplicant works (if you use WiFi).
Then ditch systemd in favor of a more minimal init program.
You're ready for Gentoo (remember to use SystemRescueCD as an installation medium instead of the Gentoo minimal CD since the latter has neither wpa_supplicant nor UEFI support).

>>57845143
4 if you know C, 6 otherwise.
Don't learn Java unless you are a street shitter.
>>
>>57845143
>C++
If you want to know the whole language and all it's standard libraries, I would think you're probably talking a few years of intensive study.
>>
>>57845274
Is that even doable with books and online?
>>
>>57845268

>>
>>57845363
Stroustrup covers most, if not all, of it.

That said, if you learn all that shit you still won't necessarily be a good C++ programmer. Most of programming is logic and algorithms. If you don't know those, you're not going to develop anything good.

Hoping someone has some suggestions for me.
I bought a macbook pro retina in early 2015, and I like it, but the screen's already got a dead pixel and pressure marks from just putting it in a backpack once or twice. I'm thinking about selling it to fund a new laptop but I'm stuck on which one I should get.
I'd be using it for any traveling and for art college (so a tablet/laptop combo is ok).

>>
>>57846145
Replacing a CPU can be kinda hard.

You need to check if your motherboard is compatible with it(same socket)
Be careful removing the HSF.
Remove old CPU.
Clean Heatsink old paste with something (Isopropyl alcohol or artic cleaner purifiers or similar).
Put new CPU.
Put new paste over it (a small dot, rice sized).
Put HSF back.
Store old CPU for troubleshooting.

Reinstall windows because >windows
Done.

I don't think manufacturers understand what frameless/borderless means. All monitors with that description im seeing still have a border.
