I just switched to Chrome, and it's been running nicely.
It started to chug a little bit, so I checked the task manager to see what's up and with only 5 tabs open there are 10 instances of Google Chrome open.
What's the deal?
Chrome uses as much memory as it wants.
Your computer is chugging because it's constantly swapping to disc. Hope you don't have an SSD.
>>57820312
I have two SSDs. I have only 8gb of ram should I have more?
>>57820294
Chrome plugins and extensions you may have added. Also some websites need more resources depending how much they have going on, like if they use a lot of java.
>>57820320
16 is the new standard kiddo.
>>57820294
It's the tracking and botnet features.
17 for 10 tabs here.
>>57820322
It's just gmail, facebook, youtube and 4chan and I only have 1 plugin
>>57820331
Why wouldn't an SSD be good?
>>57820336
>firefox sipping
ahaha no
>>57820344
facebook embeds a whole ass-load of shitty shit.
>>57820364
It would be nice if they had a desktop app for gmail and facebook.
>>57820350
firefox has random bouts of parkinsons and spills it all over the floor
Chrome runs each tab in its own thread
>>57820386
This is craziness. Why is it so popular?
>>57820350
>>57820381
Hi Pajeet.
>>57820376
desktop app for gmail? you mean some sort of.. mail client? that's a brilliant idea, people are totally going to steal that idea.
>>57820344
What? 16BiB RAM is the new standard. I have an SSD and 16 GiB RAM and am running Chrome with 1 reddit tab, 3 4chan tabs, 2 email tabs (outlook, it's school), 2 blackboard tabs open, 13 college related tabs open, and 9 youtube tabs open. I also have 7 plugins.
My Chrome isn't chugging at all.
>>57820403
FOR the record, i use palemoon. enjoy your BOTNET friend.
>>57820411
lol I never really considered it. What sort of client is best?
>>57820420
How many instances?
>>57820403
well that anonymous strawpoll sure BTFO my argument about RAM usage
>>57820400
Fast. Stable. Great UI. Prompt security updates. No memory leaks.
>>57820440
22
>>57820400
This is the price we pay for tabbed browsers and javascript. Either they're single threaded and slow, or multi threaded and gobble up memory to keep track of everything. In today's world, more ram is cheaper than faster processors so the decision to prioritize speed over size is a good one since most computers have at least 4gb of ram while 8gb is becoming the new standard.
>Single threaded browser
>open new tab
>type in address
>waits for other tabs to finish whatever javascript instruction its running before loading new item
>multithreaded browser
>each tab may as well be a new instance of the browser, processing wise
>new tab is able to open independently of whatever is happening in other tabs
Now, this is the theory, of course. In reality, if you're running a 4 core CPU and have 20 tabs open, each tab is actually running on its own fiber, not a real thread, so more tabs will still mean slower load times, obviously.
>>57820459
>my argument
What argument? You said Firefox uses a lot of RAM, too.
OK. I say it doesn't. Now what?
And any poll conducted on /g/ about browsers has Firefox winning.
>>57820488
>atom
>25mb
Why does a text editor take 25mb of ram
>>57820510
Because it also has plugins loaded.
>>57820510
It's based on JavaScript and HTML/CSS.
>>57820510
look at the second process from top
>>57820294
Each tab gets it's own process (so if one tab crashes the others can remain open).
Further each extension can also get it's own process PER tab, so if you have 10 tabs open and all are using an extension, that could be 20 chrome processes running.

thunderbird. just make sure you don't use oAuth. fuck that stupid shit.
anybody that doesn't like thunderbird is an autistic idiot and prefers cli mailers. don't listen to them.
>>57820420
>>57820488
Now I have an Amazon tab open. Nothing is chugging, running just as fast as it would with 1 tab open.
>>57820567
>thunderbird
>Mozilla
I'm scared.
>>57820648
so what's your mailer?
I have two 4 gb ram chips. Would it be inefficient, or negligible to add an 8 gb?
>>57820691
Browser
>>57820322
>java
is it 2001 again?
>>57820691
>so what's your mailer?
kek its 2016, why do you need an actual application taking up resources on your PC unless it's for work, just use a browser.
>>57820955
Because I have multiple e-mail addresses from different providers and this way I have them all in one place.
>>57820976
My personal Gmail is actually an email address i've never given out, I have 3 other Gmail addresses that I give that just automatically get forwarded to my main address.
I've had this setup since like 2008.
>>57820709
man if you have 2 sticks, then you need to get another 2. I made the same mistake. Luckily, I managed to return the stick and get the others.
>tl;dr: the stick won't work, so you have to get another 2x4gb
>>57820579
fuck off kevin
where do you cunts waste so much RAM ? I have 4GB and I never get to 70% usage most of the time, with 10 tabs open on FF on average.
>>57821358
I'm at 5.5GB just sitting here with 9 chrome tabs, and some music playing.
Whats the current pirate bay URL?
>>57821549
Google it.
>>57821891

>>57823177
On my laptop (the computer I'm currently using), I have a quad core Intel i7-3630QM clocked at 3.4GHz. My desktop has an octa-core FX-8370 clocked at 4.4GHz.
>>57820294
the google botnet, you are part of the borg now, you will be assimilated
>>57823887
Reported.
>>57823887
I tried resisting.
Firefox now uses 2.5Gb of ram for only like 80 tabs open. Also there are always 2 firefox processes running now. And when going back to a tab I left only seconds ago there's a little loading wheel in the middle of the screen for 1 second. What did they do to firefox?!
