Why are arch and Gentoo always included in the same tier?
I've done the arch install multiple times, but I only tried the Gentoo install once in a VM and got bored after a few hours.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as GNU/Linux, is in fact, systemd/GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, systemd plus GNU plus Linux. GNU/Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning systemd system made useful by the systemd init, service manager, software platform and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the systemd system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of systemd which is widely used today is often called "GNU/Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the systemd system, developed by the systemd Project.

There really is a GNU/Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. i use arch. i just started programming two weeks ago so it doesn't really feel like im a god?

i mean the people that made the operating systems are the ones who are gods its not really impressive to use it.

just code a little bit and youll soon be humbled in the fact of how shit you actually are. unless you're one of the programmers that makes all this stuff happen.

While I agree that Ubuntu usually is the "easiest" way to handle stuff, I have to say I was impressed with Manjaro.

It sounds so niche, but the fact that they auto-installed the NVIDIA proprietary drivers if you chose non-free installation was absolutely ten out of fucking ten. Shit worked instantly out of the box and was already nicely themed. The only downside was the excessive amount of extra software that came with it prepackaged, but that was easy to remove if needed.

Full AUR access, full access to pacman, they hold back on certain packages instead of going full-ass bleeding edge and shit on the Arch Linux wiki doesn't need to be interpreted for how Debian works, just follow the wiki. So I have to say that while Arch is pretty hardcore, Manjaro was a really easy way to get into Arch and I believe Linux as a whole.

Agreed. Debian is much more of a time sink than Ubuntu. If you want an OS that just works so you can actually do something OTHER THAN fuck with your OS, then Ubuntu is the obvious choice.

I'm the guy you replied to. I meant that they're pretty much just memes, and there's absolutely no reason to use them as your main operating system.

It has even more by default than ubuntu, ( for exemple you can config your grub with an UI installed by default )
and it doesn't take random version of KDE for realese like Kubuntu that's why it's superior
>>
>All this mention of Fedora being experienced/intermediate

What does Fedora require you do to get it going aside from adding one repo and installing some codecs?

When has anyone done either here with Arch? It's nothing but anime desktop ricing.
>>
>>57813528
Arch I doubt will ever see server use.
Too unstable and finicky, it's fun to play with but will never trump debian/ubuntu lts.
>>
I'm a network engineer and we use Debian on the servers. At my last job they also used Debian. It's a great server OS, especially since integrating systemd.

Your list is fucking retarded and you should feel like a moron.

Arch has no corporate support, so it wouldn't be used by large technology companies (same for Debian though).

I'm looking into using Arch on a Raspberry Pi 3 as a shell portable FLAC audio streamer.
