You don't "need" any frame rate. 60fps is a luxury. 30fps is a luxury. Playing video games at all is a luxury.
120/144fps just happen to be very luxurious luxuries, at least compared to 60fps.

software fps capping is the obvious solution, though anybody who claims to be able to feel a fraction of a 120/144 Hz frame lag is either in the tiniest minority or (most likely) completely full of shit.
