If it had 17 keys like a real numpad it'd be actually worthwhile.

Differences between Cherry MX Greens and Gateron Greens? I hear a lot of people say Gaterons are smoother and higher quality

Can anyone recommend me the best keyboard for gaymen. No price restriction but I'd like to keep it under $200 unless it's really worth it.
I prefer tenkeyless.
I could care less about backlighting.
Less click clack the better.
>>
>>57787954
Cherry MX switches have been around since the 80s, so they have much better quality control compared to their competitors. Gateron does use higher quality contruction, but their qc is lacking compared to cherry. You can see this in their clicky switches which feel inconsistent. I'd say go for linear and tactile gaterons and clicky cherrys

For the anon who wanted a Whitefox-like board last thread, Tada68 is back on Originative. Printed keycaps, $115 with gat blacks or $145 with mod switches.

Alright, thanks for input.

>KC60 and Magiforce 82-Key on Massdrop
>both have Gateron Greens for free or MX Greens for a fuckload more

Looking in the comments, it looks like KC60's previous drop was a failure and a half.. Magiforce a better choice, or just wait for Pok3r with MX Greens to come to Massdrop?

>>

I'd say magicforce68 with gat browns,
Although I don't know how better they are compared to awful mx brown
>>
What does topre feel like? Is it better than Cherry MX Blues?
>>
>>57789138
Yeah it's quite cheap (60euros on amazon.fr) and the layout seems nice (the font is bothering me but the layout seems standard so i might change the keycaps right away)
What do you have against the mx brown?
And what about the gateron clears? Are they worth it?
>>
>>57789513
Topre is a very smooth linear switch and nothing like blues. There is a tactile bump at the very top, but you have to try hard to feel it.
>>
>>57789513
They feel more like linear Cherry switches. A lot like red but lighter, smoother, and a soft bottom out.

>Linear

NOOOOOOOO

REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
>>
>>57789630
Oh I didn't thought it was a linear switch, I would prefer having a tactile bump. So the cheaper option seems to be the brown gaterons..
>>
>>57789690
They do have rubberdomes for tactile feedback, but its very hard notice, especially when you are typing fast

i'm not a reg of this thread but after owning an HBK (which i've used for maybe 2 weeks - too lazy to sell it), multiple cherry mx switches keyboards, i still prefer the feel of a chiclet keyboard for typing (and can achieve my fastest WPM speed on it). i think the only good thing about mechanical keyboard, for me now, are purely for a e s t h e t i c s.
>>
>>57789690
They feel linear. The actual force charts showing the keypress of Topre is very flat.
>>
>>57789768
*HHKB
>>
>>57789582
Not him, but MX Browns have an awful combination of light resistance and a very faint tactile bump in comparison to all other switches with a tactile bump.

This, along with Cherry's somewhat scratchy switches makes them arguably their most uncomfortable to use.

I've only ever used reds, willing to experiment with others. I don't game as much on my PC these days and for most of my time PC gaming I've used membrane keyboards. I'm probably going to be doing much more typing on my computer than gaming.

>layout
QWERTY international, please no weird Dvorak shit.

100%, media buttons preferred, especially volume rollers and a mute button.

>backlight
Not necessary, but nice. Preferred RGB if I'm not paying out the ass JUST for that functionality.

Corsair K70

I've been really looking at the Filco Ninja Majestouch 2 and the Das Keyboard 4 Professional. My friend has been shilling Unicomp boards, and while I won't contest their quality I think that they're ugly and too big.

Is building a custom mechanical keyboard worth it? Almost everyone I see is some bare bones version that doesnt have F keys, or some small format.

I've been using a real Model M from IBM for the past 10 years. Buckling springs are the way to go. I never liked any of the cherry keys shit.

Should I ever upgrade to a modern mechanical keyboard?

Yeah I know. I'm thinking of using Matias QC, but then I'd have to get some nice keycaps, and the only nice keycaps that are around for alps style switches are keycaps salved from an AEK.

Given that this AEK II based build will finally be leaving my hands this weekend, I'd rather try a different aesthetic on my next build.

3D printed case, either a layout worth copying, or my own. Some kind of interesting and unconventional design for the case (e.g. not just another hollow, multicolored block), mx-style switches since I don't want to do something with alps again right away.

currently I'm thinking of making something themed around the modern beige with Japanese legends, cyan and turquoise, though that may very well be subject to change as I'm just throwing ideas around for now.

>>57791574
Interesting, though I already have a 65%, I think I'd either want to go smaller or larger.

I played with the thought of doing a split keyboard, but I'm saving that up for later. I've got an idea for a split keyboard, but I don't want to approach that until I've nailed literally everything at least twice, I want that thing to be no less than perfect, so I'm laying it off for the moment.

Ey, got my keyboard in and all set up.

I asked for advice several threads ago, wanting a black fullsize with Gateron Browns and blue lighting. The suggestion was a chink keyboard with interchangeable switches, so I grabbed this thing and a box of Glorioius PC Gaming Race's Gateron Brown switches and got to work.

The switches only fit after crimping one of the pins, which is broader and flatter than the ones the board came with, so I had to do that 104 times. But eventually it got done, and I've got exactly the keyboard I was looking for now. Also the keycaps it came with are country fried shit and have that awful gamerchink font you find on every ultra-cheap mechanical keyboard, so those had to go. I wanted Vortex's PBT+POM set, but I couldn't find it in stock anywhere, so I settled for a Ducky set instead.

And that's my keyboard story for today.

>How much I want thicc PBT on a HHKB.
I have to wonder how many of you that seem to hate ABS have used high quality ABS key caps before. Not like PBT lasts forever.
>>
>>57793893
I have used my HHKB keyboard for 3 years and the keycaps must have certainly worn but I don't have an issue with shine or them being smooth.
PBT lasts long enough for me, but I don't imagine it would last significantly longer on library computers because of their heavy use.
There was some guy on Reddit that wore down his keycaps significantly in 8 years who was a sys admin.
I recognize that PBT doesn't last forever.
>I have to wonder how many of you that seem to hate ABS have used high quality ABS key caps before.
I though ABS was something that wore down quickly and got smooth. I have a HHKB JP, so I don't know what high quality ABS keys like.
Care to inform me?
>>
>>57793942
I don't know what makes one ABS cap better than another but I've had cheapass key caps wear out in 3 months to the point you couldn't read the legends anymore. I've also had ABS caps that I used daily last well over a year and probably would last longer, I just wanted a change.

PBT is great but I'd take high quality ABS over low quality PBT any day..
>>

>Form Factor: Full Keyboard preferably

>>
>>57794003
My parents had one of those membrane rubber dome Dell keyboards (I don't know the model, but it's pretty popular) but after 5+ years its legends didn't wear off.
There is a dent in the spacebar from where it has worn off and the keycaps are super shiny but I can't believe how resilient the legends are.
I think it is pad printing with a coating over them.
If I were to get thick PBT I would get blanks so the quality of legends would be irrelevant. I wouldn't get ABS because I prefer a textured key that doesn't feel oily.
>>
>>57794148
That's a big plus with doubleshot ABS. The legends are almost always better.

Greens and clears are the only good MX switches.

Rest of Cherry switches deserve the flak they get.

I have blue switches of that model.

The board is solid, The keycaps are a shitty, and the switches feel a little filmsy. It's ok for the price I guess.

I got a Ganss, because it's impossible to get an MX Clears board shipped to Italy, at a reasonable rate.

>>57800746
What switches are those then?
>>
>>57800851
Yeah, didn't explain it well enough. It's MX Clears. Only board I could find with clears at a reasonable rate.

Some 90euros, but 40 days delivery. Reviews says the board is good and the switches are legit Cherry. The caps aren't good, but I was going to replace them anyway,
>>
>>57800905
I wanted to try clears as well, but I'm gonna have to order a switch tester first, not gonna dish out something like 80€ plus transport and possible customs taxes for a kb I've never tried.

That space is actually really fucking comfy, the whole thing will have a low profile case so it'll not look like shit either.
>>
Do I want cherry blues, gateron blue or gateron brown?

Are gat browns the same as cherry browns?
>>
>>57803257
>cherry switches
>low profile
While there are low profile mechanical switches, no one mass produces enough of them to make them cheap for a viable build. The cheapest I can find are 0.69 per switch, but only if you buy 100, compared to cherry's style which can sell as cheap as 0.29
>>
>>57803257
>Oh, never thought of that, sounds pretty good
tobehonest,
look at the hhkb and tada68 layout.

they did the best you could in such a small space
>>
>>57803300
What the fuck are you even talking about? I said low profile case.
>>
>>57803291
If you want clicks, get cherry blues
If you don't want clicks, get gateron browns

gateron browns and cherry browns are similar, but gateron is smoother and more tactile

>>
>>57804004
videos on youtube are not an accurate representation of switches sound.

I can link you 3 videos of mx blues recorded with 3 different EXPENSIVE microphones on similar desks and they all sound different.
>>
>>57804023
Precisely why I posted.
>>
So, I'm still missing something. What are the switches holding on to if not to a metal/plastic plate? Is it just the prong stuck to the pbc?
>>
>>57804416
Yes, switches are either just soldered onto a PCB or attached to a plate.
>>
>>57804489
>just soldered onto a PCB

Isn't that really fragile? I could see myself fucking up some solder points of a pcb when typing.
>>
>>57804517
That's why most keyboards use a plate.
>>
>>57804517
It is. They're held by peongs that clip into the PCB, but it's still far more fragile than a plate mount. That's why even 30 bucks chinkboards come with plate-mounted switches.
