iPhone 6s user here. The extra bezel on the top and bottom makes it easier to grip when thumbing the touchscreen. Used to have a cheap android with minimal top and bottom bezels and it was pretty awkward to hold, although it only had a 4 inch screen. My previous Samgsung galaxy had similar top and bottom bezels and screen size to the iPhone which also made it nice to hold. Biggest problem with the iPhone is it's too thin.

People buy iPhones no matter what's wrong with them, e.g. the 720p screen when 100 pound phones now have 1080p, so there's no reason to change it if it's cheaper to make.
