You could do what I did. I run Ubuntu MATE as my main desktop for most tasks and anytime I need to do anything that needs windows I just restart my pc and boot into Windows 7 which I have installed on the same drive.

Windows 7 is far from broke and will still be supported by everyone but Microsoft for years to come. On the other hand if you need something that is up to date duel-boot your favorite up to date distro along with Windows.

As for anything else your kind of fucked. You can pick your flavor of Windows, Mac, or Linux. There are no other options. Really I got ask why your asking though. Surely you can't seriously know those were your only options?

I prefer GIMP over Photoshop. Premiere is definitely better than blender for editing but blender does enough of what I need. If I ever need to run any windows specific programs I could just jump over to it or use wine.

Your argument might have held water four years ago at best, but phones and tablets have quickly advanced to the point where for pretty much any casual activity on a computer that isn't gaming, or a hyper-specialized program you'd need for work, can be done easily and efficiently on a phone or a tablet. If you don't game, and if you don't do work at home using a specialist program(AutoCAD, etc.), there's no reason you need a traditional desktop or laptop anymore. Most normies only use laptops anymore because of inertia.

Money doesn't magically compile an OS. The team is small, and it's in Russia. Most people are told by the media that America = good, Russia = bad so not many developers will seek jobs there anyway. Plus, Microsoft probably can't wait to sue the living shit out of them if they ever become big enough. I seriously hope reactOS becomes as powerful as Windows 7 at least, but it will probably take them 10 more years to reach that unless they give up. Of course, money does help them, but you can't get expect things to happen if you just throw cash at people and walk away. You'd be more useful if you join them if you know how to code, or at least advertise them yourself if you don't. Shilling can be very effective.

I got this netbook with 8.1 on it. instead of putting on 7 I was thinking of trying to unfuck windows 8.1 and seeing how it goes.

any tools and tips? I pretty much just want to disable MS bullshit like the new start screen, cortana, any spyware shit. some UI customization for smaller elements would be nice too, to save space. unfortunately it seems they removed that customization that used to be in 7.
