So I just recently found out that there might be a chance to add an external GPU to my laptop using a couple of fairly cheap components. Here's a video of the guy doing it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktUw2VTFyX4

I happen to have a Samsung Ultrabook from the year 2012 which has an Intel Core i3-2377m inside.

I know it's not much by today's standards, but realistically what would be the best possible GPU that this puny processor can handle?

I don't want to waste too much money on a powerful card for no reason.

My processor has 1,5 GHz frequency, 3mb smart cache, and a 5 GT/s DMI bus speed. The laptop also has 4GB of RAM totally, but if needed I can make it 8.

Thanks.

I wouldn't waste something like a 1080 Ti on that thing, but I wouldn't go too low either. Maybe a mid-range card from a few years ago, like a GeForce 210. What exactly are you trying to accomplish by adding an eGPU, though? Hoping to increase game performance, wanting to run multiple monitors, or what?

nigga what r u smokin

You got a better idea as to what card he should get?
>>
>>57742808
I would like to run some better games than the ones I can play currently. Hitman Absolution gets laggy on low settings when in crowded places for example.

750 ti
that's not what I was talking about though, the 210 is more than "a few years old" and also it wasn't a "mid range card" so saying those two things then recommending the 210 made me think you're smoking that good stuff

Wouldn't a 750 Ti be wasted, not to mention have huge power consumption? We really oughtta ask OP exactly what games he's playing so we can figure out what GPU would be the best balance between price and performance.

>750 Ti
>huge power consumption
no. what are you talking about? it doesn't even need a pcie connector

Also what do you mean by "wasted"? it's not that pefromant

To be honest I don't even know. The games I DO play right now like Outlast, Left 4 Dead 2 and Alice: Madness Returns run perfectly on my laptop as is. I do have slight problems running Runescape on high graphics though (derp).

And if possible I would like to play Skyrim, GTA4 (if not 5). I also have Alan Wake in my steam library, but I can't enjoy it. Oh and Dark Souls: Prepare to die also.

fucking no. if there's intel hd3000 or better already in the laptop, get nvidia for the option to use the internal screen via optimus
>>57742858
used 750ti is common and cheap as dirt

I'm using an eGPU setup as main computer because i tend to leave my house pretty often and my Thinkpad has a docking station so no cable mess, just plug and play.

Works flawlessly.

I looked at http://thebottlenecker.com/ and while there wasn't an option for my particular cpu, I picked the i3 with 1,8ghz. It says 750 ti is too much, so is 650 ti, but 550 ti supposedly works great.

who cares 750tis are cheap as fuck
>>
>>57744725
I also have support for PCI-E 2.0 on my laptop. The 750TI has PCI-E 3.0. Will it still be ok?

yes
