Is this just a meme? I currently just use chrome for downloads and don't have a problem with speed. Should I be using IDM or something similar, is it faster?
Also, if I should be using it, what would be a goods alternative for linux?
I use and enjoy IDM, not sure of what alternatives there are because I have never needed to look for one

Do you get better speeds or is it just nice to organize stuff
My main reason for downloading it was the organization(and that works very well when you set it up). Every now and then I will be downloading something and it will get multiple connections and definitely finish faster.
The only real complaint I have with the program is when downloading things from a site with download limits(crap filehosts) because the browser sends a download request and then IDM tries to replicate that but instead gets hit with a 'maximum downloads' webpage instead of the file to download. You can get around this by holding the insert key when you click the download, but it is usually too late by the time you realize you need to do that.
It gets multiple connections on most downloads, sorry I made it sound like it is a rare thing.
And I keep forgetting things.. It is very good if you like to download videos from webpages like youtube/iwara etc. It is very good at giving you download buttons for the embedded videos
There's also DownThemAll! which I used back in late 00's. It was pretty alright and felt way faster than regular means of downloading at the time.
