Why not Solus?

Is it just missing software you need, or did you just decide to never try it out?

I started with Mac OS, then wanted to see what Windows was all about, then OS X. I've used Linux throughout and I continue to use it. >Arch has no graphical installer for a reason.
I tried the same with MemeMint and it was a disaster. I guess its possible but the documentation is garbage and it will almost definetly break during some update because Mint/Ubuntu only covers the usecases that are accessible from the graphical installer.
You could make it work with RH or debian, I suppose.

Solus isn't a shitty fork, its an overhyped meme yes, but it has its own DE, package manager, and carries over some of Clear Linux's performance optimizations.
Mint, elementary, manjaro, and antergos are shitty useless forks.

Solus is still a joke that's missing a ton of packages, and they're fucking idiots for trying to make their own package manager and maintain repos with their tiny ass dev team.

I'm sure you COULD do that in theory, but just because it's possible doesn't mean it wouldn't be a huge pain in the ass. Apricity OS has cold freeze, so you can configure once and literally download anytime with your own patches of Linux

honest question: how many hours a month do you spend on compiling updates and software that you need to use?
>>
>>57731074
gone are the days of compiling for days on end. once you get or your main shit in place compiling from source isn't that bad. unless you are using a really old computer, or you for some reason are constantly getting tons of new software that's huge.

Takes about 2 hours to compile the entire base system from scratch, then the packages that collectively take 1.5 hours basically never get updates (let alone at the same time) so you never end up with updates that take up 15 minutes or longer (less than 5 minutes if updating once a month). Plus, -bin packages.

Just go back to good old Windows. You will feel like you are at home when you do. Linux is just a hobby. You will like it at first because it is different but you will run into obstacles. You will seek help to resolve issues and sometimes get help. But why install Linux Mint when Windows is already what you want Linux Mint to be?
>>
>>57731254
I have gentoo installed on a latitude e5400 right now. 2.26GHz core 2 duo p8400, 3GB ram. Haven't had any issues with compile times.
>>
>>57732856
>go back to windows

Windows is such garbage that you have to install autohotkey to be able to use custom key combos for media controls if your keyboard doesn't have an inbuilt media key. In fact, you can't make any key shortcuts of any kind. How pathetic. I'd expect that from a BSD, not from a closed-source multi-billion-backed OS.
>>
>>57731074
not sure, I emerge world and leave the server alone for a while
doesn't take very long, would approximate up to 10 hours a month, 1 to 2 hours per update
now were it a desktop system, it would probably take a lot longer
>>
Win98 - Old is gold
WinXP - Good
Win7 - Never tried Vista, Win8 or Win10, they just look horrible
Ubuntu - Unity sucks
UbuntuMate - using in for 6 months on my x201, I have no complains

I need an environment with the latest stable packages from upstream for software development and Arch/Antergos does exactly just that.
