Post your component list, rate other anons', ask questions in general.

Always state the purpose of your PC, your budget, AND YOUR COUNTRY if outside the USA.
If you are asking for improvements, clarify whether you want to lower price or to improve specs or build quality.

Any recommendations for a decent, not overly expensive mATX case?

Building an audio production/general purpose PC, will run Ubuntu and KXStudio. So far I plan to run a i7 6700 and at 16 gigs of RAM. Any advice on other components? I'm particularly indecisive about motherboards and don't know what features I should look for.
>>
When the fuck should I do this? Now or cyber monday?
>>
>>57688971
Since you're not getting a K cpu, I guess you don't plan on overclocking so go for an h170 and decide whether you want sli/crossfire support.

Will you even have a GPU? If not make sure the board supports integrated graphics
>>
>>57688919
Coolermaster n200, I love mine and it's $25-50 depending on rebates and deals
>>57689008
this weekend at latest, cyber Monday actually isn't real, do NOT wait
Or if you do, wait 3 months, everything will start going on regular sales again
>>57688971
That's literally all you need for DAWs, CPU and ram. Get a good external audio interface and some monitors (get good monitors before good headphones).
And while you're at it, you're missing the most important part of any modern DAW worth using: windows

I ain't waiting 3 months, but how is cyber monday not a real thing exactly? There was a 30% off jet code earlier but that shit expired earlier than i thought it would, maybe something similar will come around tomorrow or sunday
>>
>>57689213
Why not just get the node 202+ psu?
>>
>>57689223
what exactly are you expecting to go on sale?
i bought my build two weeks ago and the only parts that were cheaper today were a HDD and my 6600k. and that was maybe $40 total
>>
>>57689043
Nah, I see no need to overclock for what I'm doing. I'll consider getting the K because maybe in a few years it'll be worthwhile to do it, but not soon. The 6700 is powerful as it is and hyperthreading will already give it a boost. I may or may not get a GPU, I don't game so I'm not confident it'll be worthwhile, but if I do it'll be a cheap one.

>>57689084
DESU if I had money to burn and wanted the best audio interface I'd buy a Mac because Logic is amazing, and cheap. I can live without Windows. Worst case scenario I can always run WINE, right?
>>
Any good 4k monitors worth buying?

anyone here been though the rma process with evga?

i have a gtx 980 ftw evga i bought off some guy a year back and apparently there were some issues with it on release and many people were sending their 980 ftw's back for replacement/repair. i checked my warranty status on their website and i have like 3 years left and i also put in an rma request and they accepted it because they obviously know about the problem.

it says on their website that they will replace any faulty cards with something of equal performance/value. does this mean i can possibly get a 1060/1070 out of them because the 980 is out of production? the 980 is around 1060 performance but the value of the 980 was about £430 back then which is gtx 1070 pricing.

what can i expect? i hope they just don't return my 980 with a new bios or something.

I'm no expert, but the fact that you're paying $160 for a motherboard that doesn't support PCI-E 3.0 or DDR4 RAM throws up some red flags. That may be an AMD processor thing, though, someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I've managed to buy everything but my case /g/. Can anyone provide input on which of these two cases I should buy?

From a purely aesthetic standpoint I'm leaning towards the Dukase. I also have heard that the Dukase has slightly better build quality than the Carbide. The only issue is that I'm very limited on space, and I don't know if the Dukase will fit in the space I have, but I know for a fact the Carbide will. I'll need to get the monitor set up to know for sure, but as it stands I may need to offset the monitor for the Dukase to fit on the desk I have. Both cases are cheap/within my budget, are structured such that the placement of drives or the gpu won't be an issue and have (relatively) good airflow.

Wat do?

AM3+ is a dead platform. You'll WAY better perf from an i3 6100 and have a nice upgrade path, which means that you save money in the long run

Bought a case, a phantex enthoo pro, and the manual says to hook up the pre-installed case fans to a CPU FAN. They go via a little micro controller thing. My mobo, a Z170, has 2 CPU FAN connectors so that's fine but it also has 3 chassis fan connectors.

Am I better to
1) connect the 2 case fans directly to the mobo, using two chassis fan connectors
2) connect the micro controller to one chassis fan connector rather than CPU FAN2
3) do what it says
4) other

>>
>>57698937
It's all about CPU speed for emulation, has nothing to do with the resolution you're trying to run it at. Any decent GPU from the past 2-4 years could suffice. The old emulators run at whatever the native resolution was for those games, 480p I believe. You can then use the GPU to upscale that image several times over to sharpen it for larger displays, but this isn't too difficult for any GPU from the past few years to handle. It's not like playing native PC games where a strong GPU is needed for all of the graphical calculations as the CPU is handling all that in an emulator.

Now if you want to play 4k PC games from that PC that's a different story and you will need a very strong GPU as well.

I have an RX480 from Sapphire. The 8GB Nitro+ model. IMO it's the best one you can get but I've always bought Sapphire cards since my 4850 back in 08.

Since Cyber Monday is in 2 days, yes, wait, and see what you can get.

Further, Newegg.com seems to have it pretty cheap. Was considering getting another one using that pricematch at local Microcenter but did some research and found that running crossfire on two 480s on my 970A-UD3P with one port running at X4 would not be of much benefit. Going to do a bit more reading and confirm, and if there's a good deal, pick up another one and do a pre-Vega crossfire build, opting to repurpose or sell them later when I do my Vega/Zen rebuild.

X4 PCIe 3.0 probably won't bottleneck.. PCIe 2.0 might. AM3+ is really outdated anyway, and CF sucks
>>
>>57702779
How does it suck? And have you ever run a Crossfire build? What problems did you end up running into? I'm planning on doing a dual GPU set up when I rebuild with the yet-to-be-released RX 490. Whether it's Crossfire or, apparently, DX12 contains a multi-GPU solution..?..I'm not 100% sure.

According what's written on my board it's a 2.0 slot on the bottom so it will probably have issues. I don't think it's worth the cost since, until I rebuild, I'm going to stick on a 1080p 60Hz monitor anyhow and the 480 will spit out damn near anything I can throw at it at ~60fps on full. So I keep trying to slap myself on the wrist with "as cool as an Xfire build would look, it's not worth another $250 right now, just hold out the RX480 is doing fine for you right now you have hardly even used it to its potential yet" Mostly just me being impulsive as hell.

And what's wrong with AM3+ At least for older CPUs? I've had the same 8350 for 3 almost 4 years now and it's always been a solid chip. Just recently overclocked it to 4.5 (don't get me started, I think my chip is a bum, I can't push any higher...) and it manages to handle everything I throw at it.

But I agree they are due for a new socket. But for another up-to-a-year-or-so until I can get a reasonable price on a Gigabyte Zen board with dual 3.0 X16 slots and an onboard M.2? I think it's perfectly fine till then.
>>
>>57702686
Do you really need a full tower? You could get a nice Define R5 for this price which will easily fit everything here and more and is very good quality. Also, did you post this yesterday? I recognize that shitty kb lel. Agree that you should get faster RAM.

>>57702891
Not him but can confirm CF kinda sucks just for the fact that you can't stream or record while using both GPUs. I found that out the hard way like a total newfag. Fortunately it didn't cost me much to try it. Other than that, scaling is as advertised in supported games, I just don't think it's worth the extra heat and potential noise, but that's just me.

As for a GPU on 2.0 vs 3.0 there is barely a practical difference in practice, crossfire or not. Perhaps a 7-10% performance hit at maximum.

>>57702652
>Redundancy, considering you probably don't need all that space since you're coming from tiny HDDs. You could then use both drives without RAID later when You actually need the space

I'm only going to be using a single Rx 480. I got the mobo for relatively cheap and I like it's features. I like the little reinforced bit on the pcie slot. Helps prevent gpu sag. Placebo or not, I think it's still a nice mobo.
>>
>>57703002
>you can't stream or record while using both GPUs
How is this? Is it because it's trying to look for output from one card? I would think whatever program would just look at the display and what's being pushed to it not what the cards are doing. Maybe you don't know but I'm curious as I'd like to get into Twitch streaming sort of. But I could also do that in 1080p if I had to.
Still I don't know if it's worth the value proposition right now to do an Xfire build, even if it would increase performance.

I had CF 280x that came in a used rig that I bought. A lot of games don't have CF support at launch or have stuttering problems. In general it's more user friendly and not much more expensive to get a single GPU. For instance a 1080Ti will probably be about 800USD, and x2 1070s would also be just shy of 800 for the same perf and fewer headaches. DX12 mGPU might be awesome, but it's an unknown so far. Anyway DX12 mGPU will have pooled memory, so if you're betting on that get the 4GB version of whatever card

If you're already on AM3+ with an 8350 that's great, but just don't put anymore money into it, like a 990 board.

>>57703002
>As for a GPU on 2.0 vs 3.0 there is barely a practical difference in practice
Depends on the number of lanes. He's saying that his board only supports x4 for the second slot. Generally the 990 boards are for mGPU, 970 is only for OC

>>57703146
It's OK but if you're spending the money may as well get something good, aka >100Hz + adaptive sync
>>
>>57703112
It has to do with the fact that the recording software can only read the memory stored in one card at a time, and since CF/SLI pools the memory of both cards together to allow for the boost in performance, it becomes impossible for the software to pick up the added frames as a result of this memory limitation.

I've found display capture to be very unreliable. Though technically it is a workaround for CF/SLI setups, good luck getting it to work. I found it to be incredibly buggy for recording games, experiencing crashes in OBS or just straight up not picking up the screen at all. It also has a larger performance hit even though my PC can handle it. My point is display capture is an afterthought in most recording software suites and if recording or streaming is something you're ever interested in I would avoid CF/SLI at all costs.
>>
>>57703002
Yeah that was me. First time building so I'm trying to be very cautious, you'll probably see me post a few more times. I am gonna switch my keyboard out.
>>
>>57703251
>CF/SLI pools the memory of both cards together
You're not using 'pools' correctly. DX12 mGPU will have pooled memory. It's currently not a feature of CF/SLI
>>
>>57703251
Hm. I did just a quick google and the results on this seem to be a lot of reports of issues but very intermittent/not everyone with Xfire having problems.

And I was told that crossfire did NOT pool the memory of the two cards, they were essentially mirrored as far as memory goes.

Lol, one of the workarounds was "use another PC to look at the video/screen (assuming through RDP or something) of the one you're using crossfire on and have THAT PC do the actual streaming." kek
>>
>>57703319
>>57703291
Sorry, my wording was poor. The data stored in memory is mirrored as you are both saying, obviously we know that traditional CF/SLI of two cards does not yield double the VRAM, but if you're trying to do something like a game/window capture, the software still can only read the memory coming from one card, the other card will be disabled instantly as soon as recording begins. You can monitor something like this easily using Afterburner and watching your GPU2 usage hit 0% as soon as you hit your record hotkey.

There is no real workaround to this that I've ever seen, other than avoiding a game/window capture and trying to get a display capture setup to work, which is a total crapshoot for games as far as I can tell.

Bong here looking for some advice.

I have chosen most of my other parts but I am a little stuck on the motherboard.

Im going for a mATX board, i5 6600k, OCZ Trion 240GB SSD, Toshiba 2TB 7200rpm HDD, Zotac 1060 and 3000MHz DDr4 ram.

At the moment I am leaning towards the Asus Z170m-Plus but I am not sure if I would be better off going for the MSI Mortar/Gigabyte D3H.

OR

Do I splash out the extra £40 for the Gigabyte gaming? I could spend £200 and get an Asus Maximus VIII Gene but I dont really want to do that since that is too much.

Planning to overclock the 6600k to about 4.3GHz but it is my first time building a cpu with an unlocked cpu.

Point of this post is: Is the ASUS z170m-Plus a good choice, should I instead go to the MSI or Gigabyte equivalent price board because they are better at something slightly or is itseriously worth it for a first time overclocker to go to the £150 Gigabyte?
>>
>>57703422
Hm. Well that's shitty. I'll do more reading on it when it gets closer to build time but thanks for making me aware of this. It appears to plague both Xfire and SLI so it's not really an AMD or NVidia thing. Though, NVidia does produce more powerful single-cards so, if AMD doesn't have anything that can do 4K on a single card and I decide I want to seriously consider streaming I might be stuck with NVidia unless some other solution/update occurs that fixes this. Not that anything is inherently wrong with NVidia, I just have always used ATI and AMD and they've always done what I've needed them to and been great cards, it's just I don't know if there will BE anything from team red that will do 4K competently in a single card.

Thanks for answering by the way.

Okay so I should be fine then if I stick in the £110 range with the three boards down there.

Is there a brand that you would say has a better reputation for motherboards or are they all pretty much equal at this point?

How important would you say it is that the motherboard should be the same brand as the graphics card? Is it something nice to have if its convenient or is it a bit more serious than that?

What the other guy said. I believe you are right in pointing out that this isn't an AMD/Nvidia thing, it's more of a "how does recording software use video memory" thing. Surprisingly I can't find a lot of info re: Shadowplay and SLI. If anything, the lack of complaints tells me how few people even use multiple graphics cards, even on the green team, so it's no wonder there is likely to be no fix for this kind of thing.

Depends on what you mean by "good." Usable to play brand new games on whatever settings it takes? At least 3-4 years assuming it holds up.

For reference you can look at their other cards historically in that same price range like the 7870/270x (Pitcairn XT) which even today is still "okay" for 1080p games if you turn down the settings, even though the chip that's in them is from 2012.

AMD has been giving no competition. Supposedly their new overclockable 4c / 8t chips (SMT, not CMT like "current" FX chips) will be $150. If that happens of course the Kaby Lake i7s will be cheap by the time you need one

One more question.

I intend to have 2 fans intaking from the front, the 2 fans mounted to the pump intaking from the back and then two fans in the top exhausting.

The Asus Z170m-Plus has 1 cpu fan header and 2 fan headers. The H80iv2 has the pump and 2 fans to power. Would you recommend putting the pump into the cpu fan header and then using the bios to keep it at 100% power (I have heard this enables the system to detect a pump failure) and then putting the other fans into the remaining fan headers/ splitter?

Im not quite sure what the best cable arrangement suits liquid coolers since each time I google it I get random corsair forums with about 10 different opinions and no consensus.

Zen could be a game changer but I'll believe it when I see it. That would be great for consumers but I just don't think AMD will price them that low. I'd see them positioning a 4C/8T chip with a little worse single core performance (say it's at least Ivy/Haswell tier) against intel's locked Kaby/Skylake i5's, so maybe around $175-215.
>>

>I intend to have 2 fans intaking from the front, the 2 fans mounted to the pump intaking from the back
Those fans on the radiator should be exhaust, the rest should be intake. There's really no reason to keep the fan at 100%. If the pump does fail, the system will shut down from overheating before the chip is damaged.

>>57705237
1050 cost a lot here
>>
>>57705351
That's why the OP says to list your country of origin
>>
>>57705114

Yeah I think I will stick with the ssd and 1060 thinking about it since I dont intend to go for 1440p for a year or two at least and there will be a better 1070 equivalent then.

Yeah I didnt think the temps inside would be particularly bad, I will have to do some testing when I build the thing.
>>
>>57705450
Estonia, sorry
>>
>>57705331
Do you already have the motherboard? Consider an i3-6100 if not. If you do have the mobo, consider the refreshed i3 4370 for a little more money.

Like other anon said, the 1050 is about twice as powerful as 750ti.
>>
>>57705239
It's not a meme, bro. Don't worry. Poorfags shit on X99 because they can't fathom that a computer might be used for more than video games sometimes.
>>
Which 1060 should I buy? The EVGA 1060 SC 6GB was looking perfect for me, but I don't want something that could burst into flames.
>>
>>57705745
Get MSI or ASUS
>>
>>57705752
I got an EVGA 1070. How fucked am I?
>>
>>57705745
the 1060 was fine
>>
>>57705934

Nah anon, it's just as bad.

>>
>>57706021
i know 3 people with that card. they dont have any issues
>>
>>57706061

You can't measure overheating VRM until something catastrophic happens. Nobody should buy that card, or just about any EVGA card until they sort their shit out.
>>
Is there a good motherboard that doesn't have any problems?

rip my wallet

Also ordered an HGST 2TB drive for $50, and need to order all the cooling components.

Enjoy your housefire.
>>
>>57704294
Do they even put GPU's on sale on cyber monday?
>>
>>57706765

You mean the problem they were having with the stock coolers? The one that I don't have because I ordered the waterblock version?

I'm not too worried about it.

I kick myself for not saving up just a little bit more to get better parts before pulling the trigger but since it's been awhile, tell me.

should I upgrade the gpu and power through the bottleneck that would come with the upgrade, or swap to intel and remove the bottleneck but still have the gpu for awhile?
>>
I have to pay massive Austax on buying any kinnd of part, so my shit tier build for 60hz 1080p is up to $1500 AUD

https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/BTF7pb

Any kind anons got an idea how to lower the price more on this while managing to still be able to game? Mobo seems a bit memey but its a cheaper one and i know little about them
>>
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/w8DtKZ

Thoughts on this? I really like the case even though it's really expensive. The rest seem ok to say the least.

What are you guys thoughts on buying parts from ebay instead of Newegg and Amazon?
>>
>>57707028

How poor are you exactly?
>>
>>57705167
you can get a 470 for ~$150
>>57706660
lol $130 for ram
>>57707028
why do you need to upgrade?
>>
>>57706890
Does it cover the VRAM? If no, enjoy your housefire. If you want a custom loop or something, better take a look at EK and build it yourself.
>>
>>57707197
Shit build.
>>
>>57707365
Why though? I need to know.
>>
>>57707399
>Expensive as fuck mobo
>Gigabyte
>2400 MHz RAM when 3000 is optimal.
>Sandisk/Hitatchi combo. WHY
>Gigabyte...GPU.
>Case, ODD, and PSU are the only ones good.

Seriously man, lemme fix it up for you.

$200 case?????
>>
>>57707399
Your cooler is not fit for high OC but your CPU + mobo tells you that's what you want. Also, you probably won't ever need all the features of the UD5, so why not the UD3?
No 3000 RAM, huge meme case that's more expensive than the mobo, which is just stupid. You can get a better 1070 for the same price than the G1.
Why get the NEX when the G2 is much better and why get 750, you'll never need this.
Seriously, there are better options to burn your money, like literally burning it.
>>
>>57707478
nothing wrong with gigabyte mb and hitachi
>>
>>57707222
I dont have income as I'm a college student, I got the money for the first build by selling shit and I can probably pull the $400 I need for the cpu, mobo and ram upgrade or gpu upgrade.

>>57707278
I like my games at 60fps with minimal stutter, that's why I don't play on consoles. my cpu is a bit on the weak side for open world games and gpu does alright for 8th gen games but have a hard time keeping 60fps without throwing out graphics settings that makes the game look decent.
>>
>>57707508
Oh shit, I didn't even see that.

Yeah, cut it down a fractal design or something, that's too fucking expensive.
>>
>>57707723
but I found one on ebay for 125 dollars.
>>
>>57707753
Dude, you don't need a case that expensive.

Hell, you could put more money to a micro atx mobo and then Get the Fractal Design Mini C for even less, which works fine.

There's videos on it too.
>>
>>57707781
Ugh. I've been trying to pick the right components all day. It feels like even when I learn a lot about picking the right pc parts, I'm still picking shit builds.

Now when I'm looking at my build it does feel really unpractical.
>>
>>57706660
Where's your SSD m8?

>>57707028
If that is new don't get it. Get a used 8350 + aftermarket cooler+mobo+RAM combo.

New, get an i3 6100 + DDR4

If you already have the AM3+ board get the 8350 used + aftermarket cooler and sell the 6300.

Also buy an SSD
>>
>>57707863
Start with one of the builds in the OP and customize it
>>
>>57707316
This. Buying EVGA anything right now is nothing shorter than full retard >>57706890
