My old laptop died after 4-5 years of use, and now I need a new one. Which laptops are good for school + daily browsing use(not hardcore games)?
I dont exactly need the highest performing laptop if a cheaper one does the trick, but im currently thinking about getting the surface book. Would it be worth the $1240+? Can any of you recommend any laptops?

Buy a second hand ThinkPad. Get one of the "convertible" models if you're leaning towards a Surface.

If it is just simple word processing, browsing, and maybe light programming then I can recommend looking into chromebooks. They are cheap and come in many configurations. Also you can install linux alongside chrome os or completely overwrite it if you want. If you need windows applications for school then get a lightly used or refurb laptop with windows.

Would any Desktop be more powerful than the surface book? I just saw the price of a chromebook, and what I think is a $400 desktop, and would rather buy both and still save instead of the surface book.
The thing is, any laptop I buy would bascially be used for everything, since I dont own a desktop, and im not sure if the chromebook is enough on its own.

I guess it depends on what you do? I really dig my Acer Chromebook 14 even though it only has a celeron it's battery life is great and it is usefull for when I'm on the train and whatnot. However I also have my desktop at home, for whenever I actually need to do something intensive like video editing and 3d applications. Personally I've always been of the mind that it's better to have both a powerful desktop and a lightweight device for on the go, so it doesn't make sense economically for me to blow $1000+ on a laptop when I have a desktop worth nearly $2000 sitting at home. You could try asking it stupid questions general just because I think a lot of anons don't care much for answering threads specifically about purchase recommendations

Buy an acer chromebook 11 and a mid tier desktop
Chromebook for web browsing, office applications, media viewing and shit
And the mid tier desktop for porn games and whatever more intensive shit you have to do
Pick up an lga 1150 system with an i5 4460, 8gb of ddr3 and maybe an RX 460/470 for cheap and youre golden

maybe consider getting a chrome book and switching it to a linux distro, external HD are cheap, but it depends what youre into
