Why should they, or we, care?
You're obviously not going to buy one.

If you don't like Apple, Good for you, just don't shove this shit in our faces expecting everyone to roll on the bandwagon after you.

It's time you neckbeard lil dicky anti apple virgins grasp the fact that computers evolve and they become monolithical, the computer of the future doesn't have a bunch of impractical ports and internal parts to fiddle with, computers shrink down and get rid of their vestigial burdens.

This is why non apple laptops aren't selling anymore, you're stuck in the past knees deep in shit.
>>
>>57645815
>2 ports
>evolve
How the fuck are you still breathing ?

Monumental fucking retard

TLDR: for retards like yourself

>The trackpad is easy to access and straightforward to replace.
>Use of proprietary pentalobe screws makes servicing and repair unnecessarily difficult.
>The entire battery assembly is strongly glued into the case, complicating replacement.
>The processor, RAM, and flash memory are soldered to the logic board.
>The Touch Bar adds a second, difficult-to-replace screen to damage.
>The Touch ID sensor doubles as the power switch, and is paired with the T1 chip on the logic board. Fixing a broken power switch may require help from Apple, or a new logic board.

Basically if a single fucking thing breaks the whole board is useless, fuck apple and fuck you for supporting this shit.

What improvements does a soldered in SSD bring?
>>
>>57645865
Nothing, when the NAND dies you have to replace the whole logic board which is stupid and wasteful

>>57645873
How often does a SSD die? By the time that happens you will probably want a new computer anyway (assuming its not a manufacturing defect which is what warranty is for). As long as all the components are recycled it isnt that big an issue.
>>
>>57645865
Less internal space wasted, less weight for the laptop = light, thin laptop

Of course negative anti apple virgins never mention this
>>

>>

Intel is clearing their skylake stock and apple will make greater profit by buying them at discount.
>>
>>57645800
>Why should they ... care?
Because if the board gets irreparably damaged you lose all the data, even if the data is not damaged.

And yes, yes, backups are important, but you're not always going to have everything backed up so increasing the potential ways you could lose that data is not good design.
>>
>>57645932
>> no kaby lake
Unavailable in low power/new model coming
>> no 32gb of ram

>> no nvidia gpu
Yeah, how about that. With Retina and all.
>>
>>57645909
>How often does a SSD die?
NAND chips can die at the drop of a hat.
Failure rates are remarkably low now but that doesn't mean zero.

>>57645865
You don't need to make a socket and then have that socket take up some of the thickness of your device.

Basically, cosmetic.
>>
>>57645964
And how would you permanently damage a laptop motherboard?

By buying $10 chink chargers? Kek
>>
>>57645801
>Oh great so when your Memebolt port shits itself after you plug your chinese dongle in and fries all your garageband and furry porn you'll have to go to apple to get your data back

Barely any normie is going to be able to salvage their own data anyway, Apple aint gonna care about dem "pro users".
>>
>>57645964
>Because if the board gets irreparably damaged you lose all the data, even if the data is not damaged.
It's pretty obvious the people posting here are unfamiliar with the concept of "backup". Macs of all types backup either locally or to the cloud. Isn't that a neat feature? That way if your SSD gives up you don't lose anything much.
It also means your SSD has one fewer points of failure (and guess how failure-prone sockets are) and the main board design can be simplified and cheaper.
>>
>>57645980
The most common way is through liquid damage.

A lot of it can be repaired but some things are instant death, like 12v to the CPU.

It'll happen. In a year or so Rossmann will start getting these Macbooks with liquid damage and some he won't be able to repair or recover data from.
>>
>>57646018
>Rossman
No one gives a shit about that Jew.

>liquid damage
You eat and drink over your laptop?
Disgusting.
>>
>>57646001
Yes goy, just backup everything to the cloud. >>57646018
>>
>>57646001
>Macs of all types backup either locally or to the cloud. Isn't that a neat feature?
Yeah, it's great if you don't have a metered connection, you have a connection that doesn't have shit upload speed, you're connected to the Internet constantly so any new data you make or modify will be immediately synced, etc

Backups are important and cloud backups are great but, and especially because these are fucking laptops and they are designed to be portable, there will always be the possibility for the computer to get damaged and the data to only be there on the disk. And in this case that means goodbye data.
>>
>>57646033
>You eat and drink over your laptop?
I don't, which is why I don't have any liquid damage on my laptop.

But I am not everyone, and I am not representative of everyone, especially not Mac users.
>>
>>57646078
>backed up locally
>concerned about metered connections
HAHAHAHAHAHA
>>
>>57645827
Wait...you can't even upgrade your fucking RAMM anymore???

What in the name of fuck happened?
>>
>>57645964

The new Macbook Pro has a header to retrieve the data, even if the logic board has failed.
>>
>>57645975
>Failure rates are remarkably low now but that doesn't mean zero.

It's orders of magnitude lower than a conventional hard drive.
I don't have a lot of sympathy for people who don't do regular backups at any rate, especially when things like Time Machine make it so fucking easy to do.

>>
>>57646169
I bet it is somewhere near the edge where the board commonly gets corroded when it gets liquid damaged.
>>
>>57646211

It's on OP picture.
The vertical insertion flex connector to the left of the Platform Controller Hub, marked in blue. Normally it's covered by a cowling.

Even with removable storage, liquid damage can still ruin your day, there's no way you can tell me having a removable SSD would be better in that situation, it's a total crapshoot.
>>

cons: I don't know, for me I'm a user, not a geek who wants to add a new GPU or whatever Direct X 32 things

so what? if you keep with old crap you will be doomed to rely on obsolete versions, and start dealing with dying battery, and securoty issues, and keys starting toi get stuck, pixels starts decaying after a couple of years. find me one laptop older than three years that works today.
mine is rather old already, two years and the keys tend to get stuck. if you use a computer evrryday it is inevitable.

Are you kidding?
I see 5+ year old laptops on a daily basis, and yes they are Macs.

Just last year I saw someone with a still working iBook G3 from 2000. Sure, the battery was completely toast, but it still worked when you plugged it in.

If you treat your devices well, they'll outlive your expectations.
>>
>>57646383

Battery is at 90% of original capacity, still works as well as the day I bought it.
>>
>>57646257
>he has zero formal training in anything.
You're right.

>Rossman isn't a repairer, he operates a chop shop
You're kinda right. Most components can't be "repaired". If they break, they break and you have to replace them.
Louis replaces them. He repairs the boards by replacing them.
>>
>>57645911
I'm pretty sure the XPS 15 is thinner and I'm sure it does not have a soldered SSD. This wasn't some physical restraint, Apple just sucks at making laptops.

Someone sell this guy a car with the tires welded on, since he's just a commuter, he doesn't know how to change a tire so he shouldn't be able to either.
>>
Since everything is now on the same pcb how long until Apple water proofs it all. That might be worth the lack of removable components.
>>
>>57645771
>apple, once again, makes a disposable limited-lifetime facebook machine
>spergs, once again, get mad
They are marketed towards people who can afford to buy a new one every 3-4 years and/or can't bear the shame of using an outdated apple product. That's how they make money and I don't blame them, if I was running a company with guaranteed market for overpriced consumer electronics, I'd be doing exactly the same.
Anyone who gives a honk about longevity or upgrade possibility should just pick something else.
>>
>>57645771
How do they recover data when shit fucks up?

Does it have some type of recovery/diagnostic port that can treat the board like a disk when something fucks up?
>>
>>57647081
>Does it have some type of recovery/diagnostic port that can treat the board like a disk when something fucks up?

Yes.
>>
>>57645909
i would be more concerned about the rest of your board failing when; for example, you accidentally cum on the palm rest rendering your freshly photoshopped jojo nudes inaccessible and you with a $1000 bill for a new logic board because applecare doesn't cover liquid damage
>>
>>57646383
Hmmm, I wonder why you would be advocating buying new hardware frequently, even if the old hardware still works.

Who could be saying this?
>>
>>57647226
Then honestly I don't see the problem if it's easily accessible by 3rd parties

usb 3.1 and flash drives should be good enough for storage :^)
>>
There is a hardware bug where the touch bar stops being seen by the machine and so the touch bar is rendered on screen instead.

There is another hardware bug where weak shielding on the USB ports means that any usbc device has a high chance of knocking out your wifi until unplugged. This includes the charger.
>>
ITT: /g/ can't into EE
If you know so much about engineering then you go work for Apple and design new computers.

My biggest problems with the new MBP are the ports, keyboard, GPU and touchbar. MagSafe should have been kept in my opinion. A 60% keyboard would better on a laptop. I don't understand why they went with AMD graphics. The touch bar is dumb.
>>
>>57647081
I'm told Apple Store usually doesn't offer that service if the board fails and that your only hope would be a third party. Make regular backups, dumbass. Or use a typewriter.
>>
>>57646385
Ultra Slim Jimmy.
>>
>>57647786
Since you know so much about EE, then what is the benefit of having the chips soldered to the board instead of packaged?
>>
>>57647786

AMD graphics support 6 displays at once. 5K requires two streams. To meet Apple's 2 5K screen goal requires 4 out of the 6 streams. The internal display is another so that's 5. Nvidia doesn't support 6 displays from one unit if I remember correctly. DisplayPort 1.3 will put 5K on one stream which would allow the use of Nvidia.
>>
>>57647508
I think he's referring to the "port to nowhere" that ifixit found.

https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/MacBook+Pro+15-Inch+Touch+Bar+Teardown/73395#s148741

Nobody other than Apple knows what it does yet. So no it's probably not accessible by 3rd parties.
