How can I start a business doing kernel modifications? Everything is open source now, so I have to make money selling metal, services, or support. I am just getting into kernel dev so I don't understand the market. Any ideas? I want to do this for a living- not a job
By seeing if there's enough people who wants to outsource kernel development then offering them your services for a dollar value.

lots of hardware manufacturers want customized kernels. I know one company who makes SANs who is dying for custom modifications to the iSCSI portion of the kernel.

Find embedded work or people that work close to the hardware. Look where EE's flock in droves but still work on x86/powerPC/ARM whatever platforms that run Linux.

I was betting you were another EMC shill. Nice to be surprised on /g/ sometimes.

Ive never even heard of this before and I'm sure it's got its niche but good luck getting an enterprise account. Everyone's in bed with EMC or (lol) IBM, some fags moving to HCI because it's the new "the cloud gotta have it" or meme flash array companies but even THEY are on gartner.
I'm sure its cool but you're going to want to front it with some SDS piece like Datacore or IBM's thing I forget the name of that treats arrays of all makes as a tier you specify. I guess what I'm saying is suck my cock
You'd make more money working at mcdonalds. Turn back now while you still can.
