Could use advice:
Which would you rather have on a Z97 platform for video editing, and MOSTLY gaming? They will be the SAME PRICE to me as my boss is clearing house wholesale.
i5 - 4670K
or
i7 4790

Definitely the i7. I have that one exact processor (the non-K version) and I haven't had to upgrade at all since I got it. It screams along in video editing AND gaming.
The i5 is 3.4ghz unlocked, the i7 is 3.6ghz locked.
I could get the i5 to 4.2ghz with the multiplier, but reading google, the most i'll be able to get out of the i7 with blck overclock would be 4ghz

I7, hyperthreading is more important than over clocking
Hyperthreading > not. Always. Except sometimes. This isn't one of those times.
Any other opinions before I go through with the i7?

Yes, get a K.

Pathetic ancient technology. It can't even stream Netflix at 4k. Wait for kaby lake.
Get the i7, hyperthreading does wonders for video editing.

I'm getting a board + processor for $90. Both are pretty huge upgrades from my 8320, even at 4.4ghz.

i7 mate. Turbo boosts to 4ghz on 2 threads/3.8 on 4. i5 will have to hit 4.8ghz on all cores to compete with the i7HT on multi thread.
The 4790k will remain a beast for quite a while even without OC'ing, the stock turbo boost will probably be enough for all but the most extreme and isolated cases

what instruction sets does skylake and kabylake have that devil's canyon doesn't have
>>57643114
instruction sets dont matter at this point. modern i5 and i7 are more than capable of decoding codecs fluidly and don't need a dedicated decoder/instruction set on it.
