So is there any media server software which uses a MS SQL backend so I can make a fail over cluster? Without doing something dumb like sticking a a SQLlite DB on a iSCSI mount and hope everything works right and the db doesnt get corrupted when it fails over?

Plex, Emby, NFS with Kodi are good options

Emby plays nicely with Kodi and you don't need to take the trouble of setting up something like Mysql

waste of money. the only benefit is micro managing users which is pointless if you just need to throw up a stream for yourself or family members.
