Xamarin is not really the best, there are a lot of weird bugs and caveats to it. If you really absolutely hate java then sure try it. But I would recommend to use java.

Android java community is also much much larger and you'll readily have more experience and answers to problems at your disposal. Xamarin community and forum sucks in comparison. If you need to do stuff that's not something in their tutorials, you'll have to dig through their example projects or read their API, which isn't that well documented when you get deeper into it.

If you want to get started fast, use Java.

Yea its OOP but syntax is a bit different. C# is easier, at least for me.
