Xiaomi doesn't spend money on marketing. Production in China costs less. They don't care about big profit margins. Since they're not as well known, they don't care if they release a bad product because their reputation doesn't have much to lose.

Meanwhile everyone had high expectations about the "pure Google product". They probably put more money into research, production and marketing of the Pixel than Xiaomi has with all of their devices combined so far.
