Bear in mind there shouldn't be any expectations of privacy. Your ISP is likely going to monitor everything you do through their systems since shell accounts are so prone to criminal activity.

Not going to happen through a shell account or VPN. You're just remotely accessing someone else's computer. The owner can monitor everything you do.

The only way to achieve Internet anonymity is through access of public WiFi, making sure your computer / browser doesn't leak any personal information, and your useragent string isn't so unique that you can be easily bubbled and tracked.
