Hi /g/

I've never used a linux distribution in my life before (windows only), and I dont have much experience with coding and advanced computing like many of you, but based on a very little bit of research, I want to give Solus a try

Would you recommend Solus as a good distribution for a complete novice?
What do I need to know to make the experience worthwhile?
How do I even install Solus? I'm planning on buying a thinkpad or something (as my old laptop died) to try it out
Are there any limitations Solus will have over Windows? (I dont really game so that's not an issue)
>>

From what I've seen and read, gentoo looks a lot more complex than Solus, would you agree?

You have to understand that I am really bad at this stuff, so I want to test the waters first and Solus looks like a good first step is why I'm asking
>>
avoid solus, the best first distro is Gentoo. after you get the hang of using gentoo for 4 or 5 months you should be ready fro Solus or Mint
>>
Save yourself some headache and just install ubuntu or mint and not a meme distro. Then you'll atleast be able to google your problems.
>>

I installed gentoo as my first linux OS. I know it may look intimidating at first, but all you really need to do is just take it slow and read through everything carefully.

i think SolusOS is good for daily using.

Solus is built from scratch and it's quite new, so you'll have a hard time googling for fixes you might need. I suggest you use Ubuntu or one of its derivatives for now, it works like any other linux and a quick google search will net you all the answers you may need. I actually use Kubuntu myself
>>
>>57600787
Solus is fucking trash. Install Peppermint OS. It uses Ubuntu/Debian repos and has productivity software that makes Google office stuff (sheets, slides, etc) feel like native apps.

>>
>>57600787
In all seriousness, don't install Solus. It really is not that good.

Solus is a pretty operating system with very limited repositories. It doesn't support deb files or npm which makes it very difficult for installing new software. And, of course, it won't support exe. Other Linux distributions can support all of them.

I recommend Ubuntu or Mint or Lubuntu for novice users.

A word of advice: don't believe the thinkpad crowd. It is essentially a consumerist cult.

Ignore the Gentoomen and Kevinfags who are shilling relentlessly.
>>
>>57601039
This is fake. It took me 50 seconds to boot Solus.

Don't lie. This is from a cold boot.

>>
Solus is pretty great and very quickly has caught most of /g/ by how simple, yet powerful it is.
You will encounter a few Gentoo trolls and others who are afraid of change, but the fact remains that solus gets so much attention here because it is superior.
It is pretty, and easy to use, so I think you should definitely give it a shot. It also has gui tools for pretty much everything, so it won't drop you right into the deep end by forcing you to memorize commands for everything.

If your choice of distro is based on the amount of Documentation available, then Arch would be the best distro for you. The Arch wiki is the best place to go for info. It's almost always correct, unlike the guides found on google.

Look up how to make an encrypted swap. The only guide I found that described how to do it safely was the Arch wiki.

I'm not a shill; I rarely even come on /g/ since its 33% coding/linux discussions which I dont understand, 33% shitposting about apple/thinkpads/browsers/Moto G/ and 34% generals

I just genuinely think Solus looks quite nice and probably the closest to Windows (UI-wise) -- and therefore my assumption was that it would be easier for me to adapt to as my first linux distribution

I'm just sad most of my questions weren't answered. It's mostly people telling me to install gentoo or another distribution and comparing (read: sperging out) over distributions which doesnt really help
>>
>>57601460
Mate just give solus a go, it doesn't need a large partition and is dual boot friendly. The installer will set everything up for you and partition your drive, it's painless
>>
>>57601460
Solus only really sucks if you are an advanced user because of lack of repos and the fact that if you really like the look of it you can just install the budgie desktop for arch instead.

If you are dual booting make sure you know how you are going to set up your partitions going in. The live install comes with gparted just use that to partition your drive.
>>
>>57601550
The installer changed a lot over the past year you know.

>>
>>57601087
The only thing that has "gotten attention" is the exorbitant and cringeworthy shilling. Seriously, go shill elsewhere. It doesn't look credible at all no matter what you think yourself. Your desperate Solus spam is just a laughing stock or an annoyance to everybody, depending on the mood.
>>
>>57601210
This. It looks way too forced and tryhard. A halfway intelligent person can tell a troll from a shill and in the case of the neverending streams of Solus praise (or praise concealed as "questions"/"seeking help" just as in the case of OP) surely looks like the latter.

I'm going to install Fedora 25 when it's out and see what's that like.

It depends what you're switching from:
Windows 10: security, package manager, better gui, no botnet, you don't have to spend money on the OS
Windows 7: security, package manager, better gui, support will be continued, you don't have to spend money on the OS
OSX: package manager, better gui
BSD: software support

LITERALLY

I've never tried Ubuntu on Windows. It's not part of Windows because it would violate the GPL to distribute that with Windows.

>windows update is a package manager

Windows store actually is a package manager. I just forgot about its existence because it's not a very good one.

I've tweaked the fuck out of Ubuntu 16.04 and it remains rock solid:
I run the lowlatency kernel, alsa+jackd+pulseaudio with jack and pulse playing at the same time, I use the nvidia proprietary driver, chrome beta, the latest wine development version, Unity tweak tool, compiz config settings manager, kxstudio plugins, and I run steam for gaming as well.

Tell us about the specific bugs you encountered in Ubuntu.

Solus has absolute shit for packages. So have fun compiling all of the programs you want from source.

Use Ubuntu or Mint if you want a distro that's actually good for novice people.

Unity is the easiest, most functional DE for a Linux novice. Some people whine about it taking 400MB instead of 50MB of RAM or whatever, but RAM is cheap.

No. Install Gentoo. It's one of the only stable, reliable distros around.

>Unity is the easiest most functional DE for a Linux novice

It should be, I mean, that was their goal, but it isn't, and it's not just about RAM, if it were for RAM he would've excluded KDE.

Unity (specially the latest versions) break in a lot of machines and have a lot of trouble in general, by definition any werks-on-my-machineā„¢ program isn't begginer friendly.

Start with something with a large userbase like ubuntu or similar. unity or gnome or kde who gives a fuck
> large userbase - support readily available
> relatively bug free
> .deb based so you can use a variety of software management tools or download installers directly from the web.
.deb packages are kind-of an equivalent to windows .exe files or osx .dmg files. other distros have similar files but debs are the most common.

after having used at least a dozen different distros i gotta say it makes fuck all of a difference except the more normie you go the easier it is to get support, especially when you're new to linux. there's very little of use that neckbeard elite distros can do that you cant do on ubuntu.

gentoo is for when you've finally had a meltdown and decide to devote your life to a massive timesink shitfest of optimization, ricing and e-penor enlargement.

it's good for tinkering and learning about linux but if you just wanna use it, use a mainstream distro
