We have a federal system which is why there is a duopoly. The same would happen if it was popular vote nationwide. You can see problems with other current systems like the UK for example. UKIP has no real voice since they didn't co-opt a mainstream party. USA the white middle class took over the GOP/Republican instead of building a new party.
