Learning on your own is fine and has it's merits, mainly a personal understanding of whatever it is your learning. But the problem is in the academic and corporate world no one gives a shit what you know but what the certificates and degrees you have say you know. Sadly the legacy student that goes to MIT for a social science and gets the MIT degree yet bullshat his way through it and knows nothing will sadly pull the job over the schmuck that truly dove into the deets and went through the same courses online in his own time and deeply understands the material.

This. There's only so much time in the world. Most people here are already college students at a pleb tier university that isn't MIT. No point in doing the same curriculum twice for the same degree.
