I do know and I do know programming perl and python.
Guess as a sys or network guy I can achieve enough with only getting as much certs as possible, but not sure.

whats important is doing what you want and following it through. you could go into a company you know works on the same systems you do. Using tools and sights you can detect os and make your decisions based on their standards. you can work and in some cases be reimbursed for you certs.

i used http://builtwith.com/ to see that my current job was running centos. then i searched facebook and linkedin to scrape people that work here and their credentials.
