Friends mom just game me a very shitty acer.

1.6 Gh, 512 MB memory and I think 10 Gigs of drive space. Came with some crappy proprietary OS that it doesn't even boot into. What distro should I put on it for just fuck all really and to have a mobile project laptop (for my pi)

Tried Ubuntu just to see. I get this message

>This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU. Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU.

Looked online and they said enable VT-x/AMD-V but I don't see that option in the BIOS on top of the fact It's an intel cpu

I don't want this to turn into a chore I just want it to work. Ill see if those other distros work, I think it's because it's 32 bit not 64

Install Windows if you can't install Gentoo
>>
>>57550110
I wanted to avoid windows if possible. The label says Acer Aspire One. Trying out MATE right now
>>
>>57550095
Yes you need to use the 32bit version.

What did your friends mom give you that for? You hit that?
>>

Install Mint or Puppy
>>
These trolls are telling you large OSes.

I'd try Lubuntu. It's the lightest Ubuntu based OS.

Puppy seems like overkill.

Hah, no, She works at a computer place and I asked for a free laptop and its what she gave me.

>ubuntu forums suggest enabling vt-d
Is ubuntu this broken or are their users idiots?

>>57549965
I just run arch without a desktop on my similarly specced eeepc.
It's an irc bouncer among other things, only used over ssh or for it's network services.
>>
>>57550233
BIOS doesn't even have these options and it is upsetting

>>57550193

>You need at least 8.6 GB disk space to install Ubuntu MATE. This computer only has 8.1GB.

Well then.
>>
>>57550095
so get install media with an i386 or i686 kernel then you goddamn idiot.. can you even read? where is your tard wrangler?
>>
>>57550250
I mean, vt-d is intel's virtualization technology.
vt-d is should not be required to run a cpu in x86_64 mode. It is an extension.
vt-d is to my knowledge not present at all on any i386 processors.

Just grab a i386 or 32bit iso and install with that.
