A 290 has performance that is similar to modern $200 cards, so you are getting a ~$50 discount. But some models of the 290 are known to run hot and loud, so make sure you are getting a good model.

This? If so, that is a decent card for $150, as long as it is new/in good condition. If it is too used, then it is not worth the $50 that you are saving, as it has already lost 1-2 years of its life.

Just make sure that you keep your expectations in line: You will be getting performance that is similar to $200 cards, not $400 cards.

I'm still using my R9 290. I just don't feel the need to upgrade yet - it runs every game I play just fine. It's still got a year or so left in it I bet.

Unlikely. Driver updates improve performance, and in some games the performance will improve a lot. But a driver update is not magic.

I'd go for the RX480 right now. @ close to $150, you can get a RX480 from some of the discounts these days. Or the 1060 3GB version.

They both go around $160-170 with coupons on Jet.com and Neweggs I think.

Not fucking worth it mate, really isn't. My cousin has one and it overheats so bad that it crashes, not to mention that it's so loud that it sounds like a jet engine.

Get a 1050 Ti should have similar or close performance and run much cooler, quiter, and consume less power. Trust me, you will regret getting the 290.
