Now that the Kevin has settled, what's your thoughts on Solus as a Distro?
Good? Fast? Buggy? Easy to use?
Who uses solus here? What are your thoughts on it?
Looking for a serious thread here, please don't shit it up with false flagging and shitposting.

I have used it for two days, it was alright but now I am back on ubuntu because i am a microsoft shill
>>57547146
Nice Kevinpost. Kevin.
in all seriousness i havent tried it yet because Kevin hasnt told me if budgie is using wayland natively
>>57547224
A quick online Search reveals that yes, it does indeed use wayland.
>>57547335
But how is it tied in ? was budgie written exclusively for wayland or was it hobbled over from X11 and using all the wayland legacy X stuff like every other DE is doing i believe sans KDE neon.
>>57547146
its ~*not terrible*~. put it on my new x220 and bt/wifi/mic mute worked perfectly right away, which a lot of distros haven't figured out for some goddamn reason. it looks good and stuff runs
closing the lid doesn't lock the screen, but manually locking before close or manual suspend locks it just fine. the screen doesn't turn back on coming out of hibernation, until i close and reopen the lid. ive had problems with sleep mode on every single linux flavor ive tried (fucking WHY), but solus has the least aggravating of them
final score: 7/10 not bad for a fucking linux will keep on hd until hackintosh compatible wifi card arrives in the mail
Budgie is very nice-looking. Solus would be a very good distro if its repos were bigger and Budgie were a little more customizable.
>>57547568
I think it's budgie.
My laptop wouldn't sleep either with E17 but it works great with MATE.
I'm using Solus on my desktop though and it's great. 8/10 I'd say

>>57547146
Used to use budgie on my laptop but everything was kinda cramped so I moved back to KDE
Seems like an alright DE for desktops, though I doubt there are any features that make it more desirable than its competitors running budgie
is this the new /STD/?
Solus must actually be a good distro if /g/ hates it this much

I've been using Solus since the beginning of their development and i've been loving every single second of it!

I'm actually currently speaking with hiro about solus, and he told me he just switched to it as well about a month ago. He said that he will make it the official os of /g/ and only computers with solus on them will be able to post to 4chan.

i tried to install gnome, and it wouldn't let me. in fact, i couldn't get back to the desktop after installing it and restarting my pc. i hate budgie. it's fucking ugly.

If you like Budgie just install it on Arch, Void or something. No need to use their beta pos os, run by a fat neckbeard from his basement. God how many times are people going to re-invent the wheel just to boost their own fucking ego.
>>57547562
Budgie uses Mutter which is made for GNOME shell, which currently has the best Wayland support. Also all the panels, etc are written in GTK which also supports Wayland.
>>57547335
no, it doesn't use wayland. i already proved you wrong before. why would you continue to just lie on the Internet? because you're shilling your serbian botnet?

Hurr one guy is going to change the world by writing a new package manager. It's just going to be full of bugs and get cucked anyways by Snaps/Flatpaks.
So I installed Solus 2 days ago and it's running good on my crap computer but still there are still ALOT of bugs. But Budgie is nice, but I would rather install Gnome. It's the best distro for my low end comp.
>>57550310
No offense but that was over a year ago.

>>57550438
What bugs?
Only bug I've had is the 3.5mm on my laptop not working with solus, but it works perfect on my other laptop and HTPC/side desktop
>>57550737
Bugs in budgie, so it's not really related to Solus.
>>57550816
No as in what were the bugs?
I'm curious because I've been using solus since 1.2.0 came out and I've never had an issue with budgie.
But I still wanna know cause what works for me won't necessarily work for everyone else...

When used right it works amazingly well.

>>57551016
>What init system does Solus use?
Systemd because it's superior.
>And if this happens to be systemd by default can I change it?
Package your own init system for the distribution and write all the init scripts yourself because you choose an inferior solution so should do the work yourself or pay someone to do it for you.
>>57551136
Thanks for the info!
>>57551111
>Why would you not want systemD?
sysv is soooo comfy. It's far from perfect and probably dying if it's problems aren't addressed but still much better than systemd atm. systemd acts a bit like a PMS-ing bitch and isn't production ready.
>>57547146
Oh Lord, other Solus thread...
>>57550836
So I have a SSD installed, but starting programs is still a hassle, it does boot up quickly but if I'm starting a program like the file manager, it still lags sometimes. I can't name the bugs right now because I'm at work, so I will post it tonight.
>>57551183
Other Solus thread?
What distro does it use as a base?
>>57551352
LFS
>>57551352
None, it's indepedent from the other distro's
KEVIN
>>57551352
None, it's built from scratch which is part of why it's so good.
None of that unnecessary bloat.
I'm using it. It's alright.
Is possible to install a virtual keyboard on Solus that works? Installed Caribou and it instantly fucked the interface/menu never once appearing on screen.
Once you update it, bugs start to appear. And then there's this annoying pisi error when trying to screenfetch.
But yes it's very easy to use. Just wish I could install the megasync client.
Tell me about the package manager. Is it good?
>decent distro memed in to the dirt by shitposters so that it dies before a community can even be formed
>>57552454
of course it is!
Solus's package manager is the best package manager I've ever tried.
https://wiki.solus-project.com/Package_Management
it's so easy to use, and yet so powerful
>>57552608
The devs don't seem to think so since they are working on a better package manager called Sol.
>>57552649
porting their old package manager to C and then continuing the development doesn't mean that the old one couldn't be the best package manager I've ever tried.
>>57547146
If solus already is the fastest Linux distro, I can't wait to try the future versions where they finally ditch Vala/Python and go back to based C.
>>57547146
I love Solus, I think it's the best Linux distro because it's the best Linux distro I've ever used.
It's really good, I would even say it's the best. It's also the fastest distro I have ever used, everything is super snappy and fluid, animations are clean, and has a super fast boot up time. Everything has bugs, including Windows and macOS, so let me put it this way, it's the least buggy OS/distro I've ever used. This distro is also super easy to use, so easy that chances are you'll most likely never need to use the terminal, but it's still there for you to use if you want.
I use Solus. I think it's the best OS/distro ever created. Ikey did a really good job making Solus. Also eopkg (their package manager) is even better than PacMan (arch's package manager). They also have the nicest software center gui.
>>57547146
ok so i use win10 as my gayman desktop, buti had a laptop i wanted to use and like rice the shit out of
well i tried arch and debian but they were a pain in the ass, so eventually i said well why not get a chromebook and skip all the bs when really i just want to irc and browse.
so i remembered i used to use solus in a vm back in the day, somebody was shilling it, so i said fuck it ill give it a shot.
now i have a pretty stable os that runs doom and does irc and browses the web. can't ask for much more.
it requires almost 0 user interaction, and i only found myself using the terminal to debug a mouse.
guess the hardest thing i did was either configure hexchat to my liking or get brutal doom to work correctly.
overall its a nice little os for somebody who doesnt need a powerhouse or somebody who wants that get in get out experience.
wouldnt recommend it for serious ricers/devs/businesses, but more for your brother who gets a lot of viruses on pornhub or your mom who liked her chromebook before she spilled coke on it.
