That's because japs don't run out and buy new appliances every single year when their old one works just fine.
Notice how I used the word "appliance". A computer is considered an appliance, and not something that needs replacement.
>>
>>57531149
are they? or are we?

in eu/usa, every sensible person upgrades every ~4-5 years - even normies (although that's mostly because they think they have to buy new laptop instead of cleaning windows startup list). thousands of dollars spent on electronics we don't really need, our needs are created artificially by devs making use of all of this power that even average joe has in his smartphone or laptop.

Meanwhile nips simply don't use any gimmicks, and so their very own ugly as fuck moonrune internet works flawlessly on properly overclocked 8086. they don't waste processing power, they just live on with their pieces of junk and it totally works for them.

also, you don't need much processing power to display bunch of doujins

Studies have shown that tag+search is much more efficient than a folder-based hierarchy. The problem is that most file explorers have slow-as-shit searching and people don't tag their images, partly because it's tedious to fully tag an image without an automated/scripted assistant.

>>
I used to organize my memes and cute anime bitches etc but now I think it really is just better to have just one folder (at least just while you're saving shit). If you have everything organized then you're probably going to be hesitant about saving certain images just because you'd have to make a new directory for it that might as well end up only having that one image until you or your hard drive die.

I lost my massive collection of pics when a HDD died since I ignored the clicking and pretended it wasn't happening so I wouldn't have to buy another drive. I feel like it was for the best, if only for making the whole thing more streamlined.

>>
>>57531980
The situation on Windows isn't too much better. There's official support for tagging via metadata, but you can't do it as you save a file from e.g., the web browser. You have to do it manually. You can save (tagged or otherwise) searches though, which allows you to get rid of regular folders and simply use metadata as a folder.

WinFS, which was part of project Longhorn and was supposed to ship in the early 2000's, was a filesystem built out of relational databases. It would have been really kick-ass. Too bad it was abandoned because if there's one thing Windows loves, it's backwards compatibility.

Hydrus suck ass for the Pixiv users. It still hasn't fixed/added the ability to download manga collections from Pixiv, it just skips over them. Not too much of a problem though, the paging images is my biggest issue since you have to manually page each image(or file) one at a time because Hydrus strips the file name and Pixiv has a near perfect file naming system. This is my only issue with Hydrus really, everything else is fine.

I can knock like 200-300 a day(doesn't take me a whole day or anything, I just do enough until I get board) 4 or 5 days a week. Which gets me a thousand images a week and that eventually adds up. I never really tried going full turbo organizing mode so it's why it took me so long to finish, I just treat it as taking a piss. If one really tried though, I'd say it could take them to do all this out in about a month, much less if you go no life mode. Mass organizing is one of those things that becomes a habbit and eventualy you'll come up with a routine. Drag and dropping really helps out a lot.

I have a folder named "For use".
It was supposed to hold thread-specific images. But I never created any subfolders in it, so it just became a generic folder for anything I couldn't put into other folders.
I also have a folder named "For rereading". This one is mostly screencaps or any image with a lot of words in it, but in time this distinction kinda started to blur too.

>folders
You want something that can tag images. Once you get to a certain number of files in a folder or number of folders, folders become absolutely useless(they were useless before but still). Tags make everything easy to find and locate because all you need to do is type or click a search phrase, combined searchs, omitted searches, ect. Hydrus >>57530978 is a good starting program to use because if does images(jpg, gif, png, bmp) audio(mp3, flac, ogg, wma) video(webm, mp4, mpeg, flv, wmv) and extra stuff like swf and pdf. Down side to Hydrus is it can be pretty confusing so it's best to read the guide over and over enough and try testing a few files before fully trying it out.

There's a shit load of other thumbnail viewers out there that can also tag images for you as well and look way nicer but for me personally, I've tried many of them even the paid(cracked) version and most tend to shit their bricks once they touch my >>57542740 folder. Not trying to shill but only Hydrus for me had no problems trying to load in 70k images. That and Windows(Live) Photo Gallery, this shit runs on magic.

That's how I'm using it. Just know that unlike a lot of viewers, Hydrus makes a copies of your images(or files) and adds them to its Hydrus folder, it is then up to you what you want Hydrus to do with the originals once their imported which you can change in the settings. So for example if you're adding a 20GB folder to Hyrus you'll need atleast 20GB of free space to where ever your Hydrus folder is stored. It's all explained better in the guide https://hydrusnetwork.github.io/hydrus/help/index.html

I know someone that wrote a search engine of some kind just so he could keep track of his hentai across the many folders, drives, and computers he has.

the only things I have to organize are my programming projects, my old college assignments, and my images for posting on 4chan and some elsewhere
the images are broken down into "feels", for emotional pictures, "gestures, poses, and scenes" for things like check 'em and applause pictures, "combo" for things that straddle the lines of both, "matter of fact" for very direct images and also some sarcasm, and "not so much", which basically catches everything else, but is dominated by screencap content and chan-related things and footage of the game I'm making; there's also the folder those are all in, which has some things I haven't gotten around to categorizing/can't categorize and some old duplicates, like pic related that I just finally renamed and copied somewhere
>>
>>57530464
if you named it properly you can organize it by regex matching ;d
>>
>>57530464
I thought I was the only one this disorganized. I'm to the point I accidentally set my downloads folder to the wrong folder and I just keep it there because I'm too far in.
>>
What's the alternative to saving an image directly? Setting up an image cloud album? I might just bite the bullet and discipline myself to delete everything I don't actually need or want, since most of my images are either porn or character art/inspiration.

I'll also need to figure out how to organize all those webms from /gif/

sites like pixiv, booru etc. that have tag data can be scraped, some of them support reverse md5 search, for others the asset location is obvious from the original filename

actually my one hard rule is that i DO NOT rename files because you lose the crucial clue to the online asset-file linkage. in many cases i have been able to recover tag data using self-authored tools, but the files i've renamed are screwed
>>
>>57545230
it's not the asset location, it's which one is which, and determining that before you loser your boner
>>
>>57545166
I use the save image/link in folder extension. Helps in organizing my pics, in broad strokes. I just set up folders to certain main categories, to be sorted later into specific folders, which I haven't done in a while, so those main folders have been just building up.

BeOS had much better tagging. The filesystem was represented with metadata in a B+tree, meaning you could sort it, query it, use joins, etc. It's a shame there's nothing comparable yet. Windows and macOS come close, but nothing so far on *nix.

Honestly, this is a habit that I'm trying pretty hard to kick. Temporary folders are meant to be a place where you store stuff... you know... temporarily. But they rarely remain that for long. Except for maybe the downloads folder.

More typically, they just become nightmarish hellholes of stuff that you've downloaded, but didn't think it was necessary to make a specific folder for at the time, and now you have an entire folder of things that all fall into the category:

> "Where the fuck do I put this? I feel retarded making an entirely new directory for one file."

>actually my one hard rule is that i DO NOT rename files because you lose the crucial clue to the online asset-file linkage
I do this as well not just because it helps at finding the source but it's just a waste of time.
>>
>>57545644
That's easy

>make a booru
>upload your folder
>sit back and watch your shit get tagged
Why do you think there are so many boorus?

Is there any alternative to Windows xyplorer for other OS's? It's great to be able to apply multiple tags to files and directory and then search by tag queries.

Hydrus doesn't tag 90% of my images.

So they just sit in my hydrus thing, and I treat it like a glorified windows explorer folder.

I don't have the autism to dedicate to tagging several dozen thousand images.

I do at least separate lewd from not lewd, and it does beat the shit out of explorer.
>>
>>57543672
anyone who talks shit has obviously never been on /gif/ during dry spells of good content.

I swear the content is better than ever right now and I started a new folder just a week ago to just gather it all up. I used to delete my folders like anyone else after I'd decide to "quit", but then I'd relapse and try to browse the catalog for material and all I'd see (about a year ago) is scat, piss, cuck, bondage, bbw, captioned gif incest, hypno and shemale threads. it was awful
>>
>>57549143

Well, other than that, you have a point.
>>
So is tagging just a regular part of a file's metadata that other computers and/or OSs are able to see if you copy the file over? How is interaction between macOS and Windows? Will the metadata be preserved? Actually shown in the tags slot still?

I've never really paid much attention to it because tagging in Windows sucks dick and you can only do it with certain file types.

>>57546801

>So is tagging just a regular part of a file's metadata
Some files can save tags to it's metadata, some can't(png, gif, ect.). You can check this when you right click an image and select properties then go over to the Details tab, see pic related. Think of it like a personal notepad for that image. Since there are a few other file types that don't support doing that, most viewers use their own way of backing up your metadata(not just tags either) to some kind of database, some might not even need to write to an image's metadata either. It solely depends on what program you're using to back up your stuff.

Basically the most crucial key to tagging is knowing that you can back up your database and move it around from drive to drive and possably OS with whatever program you're using(read the manual, testing a few images, ect) and not lose anything in the process.

I want to make something that displays thumbnails of the videos and let's me tag stuff for example. Is it doable for someone who has never made a website?

>>
>>57553126
it depends. if all your stuff is in .mp4 then no browser will be able to play them without a plugin. if webm then it should be possible.

one way to do it is to have a really basic HTML homepage with different categories, e.g. "creampie", "anal", "blowjob", etc., that take you to pages with embedded vids via the <video> HTML5 tag. That way, you have an array of videos that is easier for the browser to load rather than having it all one the same webpage, which I think would be difficult for it to handle.

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
