There is plenty of stuff to do dumb winbabby

- Pretend that the difficulty of use and the incomprehensibility of commands inherent in Lunix is actually a badge of honor.
- Look at ugly, distorted fonts in your browser and on any other application you might want to run
- Reformat and install another distribution. (People have been known to do this continuously for weeks. Hint: they all suck. Stop wasting your time.)
- Watch a console display error messages.
- Convince yourself that Open Office is "just as good" as Microsoft Office.
- Read countless manuals to do the simplest of tasks. And still fail
- Say you use Lunix (which will get your ass kicked, even by other Lunix users.)
- Think of ways at work to bring up the subject of how you use Lunix, because the penguin thing didn't work.
- Fail to realize that, penguin or not, noone gives a fuck about what operating system you use.
- Eat KFC chicken around the clock.
- Manually edit config files.
- Run a virtual instance of Windows so you can play games, while at the same time saying how much you hate Microsoft.
- Argue that KDE is better than GNOME.
- Argue that GNOME is better than KDE.
- Argue that both GNOME and KDE are inferior to your chosen environment.
- Develop carpal tunnel from keyboard usage between bouts of excessive self-pleasure borne out of social-retardation.
- Depend on easy to use programs like vi.
- Try to learn how to do simple tasks in emacs, eventually using notepad to complete the same task.
- Keep your virginity.
- Be a badass non-conformist.
- Never get viruses, ever, like how a virgin never gets STDs.
- Graphically chart the shrinkage of your penis over time with bundled, GPL'd software such as GNUPlot. This is a highly requested feature among lunix users.
- Discussing the awesome non-ntfs filesystems you can use with lunix, for example one written by a convicted murderer.
- Spend hours of your life compiling bits of code, just to find out it was EPIC FAIL!

Can you or anyone else in this thread elaborate WHY anyone would use linux only? Serious question.

Everything you mentioned I do with Windows 7 and everything "just werks". So what advantage do you get from using linux? More control? Do you understand how a program or the computer itself works more or something?

Again, this is a serious question and I'm not mocking anyone. I've been thinking it might be neat to learn linux, but I can't really find a real reason for myself beyond the "it'll be interesting" aspect.

Then, where the fuck would I even start? What distro do you use, and why?

>>57508718
I haven't really looked into it much but I wouldn't get too excited. Isn't it class based or some rubbish?
>>57508720
Package management is really fucking swell
You have root access from the get go (pretty sure you get can get it on Windows but it requires some fuckery)
Tiling WMs and multiple workspaces are a nice feature
Windows is closed source and sends your data to Microsoft
Linux is more lightweight and is way more useful if you're running a server
Unix shell is nice, but windows 10 has that now
>Then, where the fuck would I even start? What distro do you use, and why?
I use archlinux because the wiki and user repos are nice and I fell for the meme.
Use Arch if you want to tinker with configs and learn more about linux. Otherwise use Debian or something.
>>
>>57508720
>>57508756
Forgot to add: it doesn't really matter what distro you use. They're all pretty similar anyway, and you can just install stuff from another distro if you don't like what yours comes with.
>>
>>57508756
I feel like you didn't really answer my question, but instead just listed additional things you can do with Linux.
The only things I see that make sense to me personally are:
>Linux is more lightweight and is way more useful if you're running a server
>Windows is closed source and sends your data to Microsoft

But other than that, what problems have you had with package management in Windows that made you choose Linux instead? How has having root access from the get go helped you, and why would it be worth it instead of putting forth the fuckery to make it work with windows?

I guess I'm still not seeing the point.
>>
>>57508720
If you have win7 and are happy with it then why bother? I installed a lightweight linux distro on my old second laptop cause it's free (costs no money) and runs amazingly fast considering such poor hardware. I don't know why anyone would want to "learn linux" just for the sake of it, but it's honestly a decent alternative.
>>
>>57508788
when you use windows and download a package the package on windows contains all the binaries for every compatible system this is also true to an extent on linux unless you are compiling from source which is always available in any distro
>>
>>57508788
having root helps manage you system in general look mundane compared to windows
>>
>>57508788
Windows literally doesn't have package management.
On linux if I want to install a program I type
yaourt -S programname
and it is automatically downloaded and installed. If I want to update all my installed programs as well as my operating system I type
yaourt -Syua
and it does it all for me.
Package managers take care of dependencies. For example, I was trying to unlock my phone on Windows recently (fuck you Xiaomi, provide linux tools). I navigated to the android sdk website and downloaded the installer. I ran it, and it told me I needed some java thing, so I then had to go to oracle's website and install that. On linux
yaourt -S android-sdk
would have handled this all for me.

Mainly programming.

Until I got into computer science, I mainly used Linux on and off just to do normie shit. Now I use it full time because everything is standardised. I need to download new libraries? It's a command away. I need to use an old version of a compiler? It's a command away. It's just easier getting shit done.

How does it work? You "export" to DAT, using what? No longer trolling, genuinely curious. And what about effects you've applied to a piece of a stem, is there any way for someone to edit them in a DAW that's not available on Linux?
>>
>>57508848
Its not hard to have a really fast boot time, anon. You just need a SSD and a lightweight distro.
>>
>>57508941

A mastering engineer isn't altering your effects or anything like that. He's working with your final audio. Imagine if you're a traditional band, he has no access to your guitar effects pedals, the microphone placement on your drums etc. That's all production and happens before the mastering stage.

He doesn't require your project files, he gets the most out of your final output. My point was that if people are still sending dats for mastering you can send a dropbox of your stems just fine from whatever program you like.

It doesn't really exist. There are some third party applications that does a similar job, but being able to install software with a single command is a lot better than browsing for the website.

This is where Arch's AUR excels. Small, obscure programs often have an AUR install script, making it extremely easy to install virtually anything you'll need.

By willfully misinterpreting this you are rejecting 4chan's covert norms and violating cooperative discourse.

Loads of Linux software supports vsts, the problem is that they have to be recompiled to work natively on Linux.

it's very hard to make windows do something it doesn't want you to do. You eventually can do it, but it's much more of a pain than it is on linux.

examples:
* attaching a debugger to a service
* building a msi-installer from commandline (which you need for CD)
* telling it not to remove/change features via updates
* telling it not to show you ads
* telling it not to send your soul to redmont
(those all are possible, but require some deeper digging in windows and are very easy in linux)

also using virtual displays on a notebook is much simpler in gnome3 than in windows

Everything.

CAD, music, writing, games, whatevs.

But here's the difference:

The OS doesn't spy on me. It does what /I/ tell it to do.

That difference is worth all the shit I went through 20 years ago to learn this stuff.

And every year, there are more reasons to stay away from Windows.

Feels good.
